While Novel Hikari at least doesn´t seem to have a 12 year old mental age
IMO Yom has a bias towards Yami and this was proved by her recent tweets about the 2nd volume of LN focused in Yami Arc
If there is a character who Yom notoriously hates, it is obviously Yuu. Yom does a lot of effort to delete any kind of scene who puts Yuu as a MC who does something or at least is something more than the submissive pegged slave of Yami, and of course

I love that the characters have more maturity than the community. Going forward Hikari is obviously going to try to 'save' Yami and I hope she does.

I get why the comment section hates her, (I disagree) and that's partially the authors fault. But being the ex of the LI isn't a sin. Yami is a messed up kid who rejected someone she loved, as self preservation not healthy and based on her backstory It makes sense. Still, she should have told Hikari when she realised who Yuu was. I also get why she didn't, she was afraid she'd loose her best friend.

No, Yami being his ex is not a problem. Him leading Hikari on and keeping this all from her and going behind her back when it clearly also concerned her and getting away with it just like that is.

And we continue with the reading comprehension issues. Yuu only did this in chapters 36-38, and there's a reason his original intention when he said the "dead phone" thing was probably to go home and cry —again— for Yami. The authoral narrative, even in the manga, makes it clear that Yuu didn't even know Yami and Hikari already met each other before his accidental encounter with Yami in chapter 21/40.
It's only in chapters 36-38 that Yuu deliberately keeped things from Hikari, fully aware that now, and only now, Yami was a matter that truly concerned to Hikari.
If it helps, chapter 38 in the web novel includes a short final segment from Yuu's Point of View where he admits, "doubtless, I was the worst today, wasn't I, Hikari?" after being physically assaulted by her (another thing omitted by Yom, so that Yuu doesn't appear less pathetic to the readers).

Am I reading the same series as other people? Do yall just make up stuff in your head? He was in a fling with Yami to try and get over Hikari. He was TRYING to move on and then Yami ghosts him. Then not too long after that, the girl he is trying to get over starts liking him.

And in that classroom, he was already ready to move on with Hikari, he had no romantic interest in Yami anymore. He was trying to break it off amicably until Yami went batshit crazy on him.
