Hold up, wholesome magical girls?!

Did the Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura senseis have a gun/s to Onanaka-sensei's head?

Damn, if I wanted wholesome magical girls, I'd watch Kill la Kill or Panty and Stocking... oh wait.

Do you think the author ever regrets the whole mass-slaughter-of-magical-girls plot from way back when because it seems jarringly out of place with the tone of the series now
Yeah, that story element sticks out like a sore thumb. Personally, I headcanon it that they didn't kill anyone, they just "defeated" the magical girls, leaving behind a bunch of traumatized and now no longer magical girls. Otherwise, I can't reconcile a past mass murder spree with having all these characters rehabilitated. And as long as the story doesn't come back to it, saying "nah, we totally murdered those girls, they are dead dead", I'll stick with the interpretation that they just beat them to a pulp and broke or stole their transformation items. I'd welcome a retcon for this tho, confirming that nobody died.

You should actually watch Sailor Moon some day. Not the shitty remake, but the original. It's really good. There are a lot of queer themes in it and also in the original Cardcaptor Sakura, which were chopped out in the American Cardcaptors version.

I think some people have a distorted view on this genre, thinking that the old entries in it were these purely happy go lucky tales. But I have seen a lot of the classics and I have yet to find the show that everyone always seems to be referencing when they complain about classic mahou shoujo and talk about Madoka and "deconstruction". The amount of emotional suffering that Sakura and especially Sailor Moon go through is not insignificant, it's just spread out over more episodes.

Not to say I don't like Madoka, it's one of my favourites. We've just been so busy subverting this genre that people forget just how good the originals were. So go watch some classics and have a great time!

I GENUINELY forgot that was a plot point, and at this point I think the author also kinda wants us to sweep it under the rug.

Except there is no prove that they actually murdered anyone (killing could have happened accidentally). If that many teenagers died, I think I'd have made a bigger splash (not to mention Utena treating Nemo and Matama differently).

Seeing Randa lying down on Michiko's lap in the end is pretty adorable! Thank you for the translation.
