Hold up, wholesome magical girls?!
Did the Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura senseis have a gun/s to Onanaka-sensei's head?
Damn, if I wanted wholesome magical girls, I'd watch Kill la Kill or Panty and Stocking... oh wait.
You should actually watch Sailor Moon some day. Not the shitty remake, but the original. It's really good. There are a lot of queer themes in it and also in the original Cardcaptor Sakura, which were chopped out in the American Cardcaptors version.
I think some people have a distorted view on this genre, thinking that the old entries in it were these purely happy go lucky tales. But I have seen a lot of the classics and I have yet to find the show that everyone always seems to be referencing when they complain about classic mahou shoujo and talk about Madoka and "deconstruction". The amount of emotional suffering that Sakura and especially Sailor Moon go through is not insignificant, it's just spread out over more episodes.
Not to say I don't like Madoka, it's one of my favourites. We've just been so busy subverting this genre that people forget just how good the originals were. So go watch some classics and have a great time!
