Silly me, I believe she's one soldier Captain who will be promoted into General, but stuck with behind-the-counter job.

No wonder her strength is this GREAT.
iirc, it was stated that her position is specifically filled by the strongest and most powerful Knight in the country. But she's also horribly inept at politicking and has a very demure personality so her subordinates shove all their work onto her because she's actually capable of doing so. Of course, I think everyone in the country has become so used to peace that they forgot why she's in the position and assume the position is just a figurehead (due to it being peaceful).

What bothers me is that somehow everyone in her chain of command somehow... forgot that she's so ungodly strong? Like they remember the Elf Commander who served 4 different times after retiring and returning. But somehow forgot that Lienna is a walking nuke just because her personality is really soft?

When you never see a person ever fight, you tend to forget how strong they are. Also, implication is that she literally never got to pull her sword ever since she was promoted to Knight Commander, and a decent amount of them were recruited AFTER she was promoted, so there hasn't been a single feat of strength or ability to call on that they would be familiar with.

I mean, she's still the Knight Commander, even inside a stomach

Man I don't know, because the world is more complicated than who has a bigger stick? Because dominance for dominance's sake isn't always desirable? I would think with current real world events being the way they are now, more people would realize this.

Even if you assume the country were of such a philosophy, how many places can the knight-commander be at once? How many ordinary knights and villagers must suffer? We already see this when the deterrent is gone.
Well, you say that but isn't that contradicted by the fact that they are getting invaded within what, days/weeks of her disappearing? And the people who would be expected to replace her got mopped up so hard, if it wasn't for the elf lady they wouldn't even realize they were under attack because the ennemies finished them off and were about to leave?

Also you don't need to have that tone, it was a series of hypotheticals. By that same token however, since she is just one person like you said, how is she singlehandedly a deterent for full scale invasions? Whatever reason justifies that surely justifies her being a one-woman army if she wants to, no?

Maybe I did not convey it properly but my point is that, as things stand, her power level and the reality of her role in the world is incongruent with the premise of the story, and, again as things stand, I do not see how the story can reconcile both of those points without some crazy contrived nonsense.

For Lily, it was one of the greater crises of her life.

For Lienna, it was an after-nap exercise.

Remember chapter 10 when people were doubting that Lienna is superhuman if Lily wiped out all her subordinates, or wondering if she really was deterrent against invasion like the story’s telling us?

I think it’s pretty clear here that Lienna is as strong as we’ve been led to believe.

If I were to borrow generic fantasy manga terms, Lienna’s subordinates were C to B- rank. Lily and her team were B to B+ rank. Amon’s brother(?) is A+ or S rank. Amon is A+ or S rank. The first knight commander elf is S rank. Lienna herself is S or S+ rank but, notably, the other characters who seem as strong as her all get there with skill and/or magic. Lienna meanwhile is all skill and strength. In a fist fight, the only character we’ve seen that’s stronger than her is a dragon who’s SSS.

Like I said then in chapter 10, Lienna was eaten by a dragon and was (at the time) the only person to survive the process unharmed. She then pissed Amon off by trying to cut through the dragon and even just swinging her sword destroyed her surroundings and his home with wind pressure. She then fought Amon - a genius mage - and only lost because he trapped her footing and a pile of debris including buildings and a literal ship fell on her and crushed her. She managed to survive that and, with first aid and rest, had no lasting injuries. She did all of this while so exhausted that she was fainting and never actually fought the dragon or lost to it - she just passed out and got eaten. She is this world’s Superman and her only weakness is being a pushover.

Oh no I accidentally did a powerscaling. But you get my point. Clearly she’s not the pushover people were making her out to be, and her presence alone was deterring a war for a reason.

I think it’s neat that the story has given us an OP protagonist while also giving us reasons for why she can’t just use brute force to solve all the story’s problems (she’s basically isolated on a deserted island that happens to be a dragon and the world is run by politicians, not soldiers).

Nonsensical decisions can be explained by the government being incompetent and complacent, both in fiction and real life. An organization making catastrophic error in conduct by being generally corrupt, stupid and/or unambitious is true to life.

And from another angle entirely: a deterrent is only a deterrent when it's unused. If you point your one-bullet gun to a bunch of people, each of them would hesitate in rushing you due to fear of being shot first. But once you've shot that bullet, the rest would gang up on you.

So the regular knights don't treat her with respect because they don't understand the geopolitics. These 'knights' don't seem to be noblemen, they're just soldiers, so that tracks. At the same time, in peacetime, why wouldn't those in the know keep her close to home, doing paperwork, doing low risk jobs, since she's so important? Why does 'respect' have to factor, especially if there hasn't been a threat to the country for a long time? Maybe you think nuclear bomber crews treated their charges like holy relics and cast incense over them or something, or treated said bomber crews themselves like royalty. Or that the world's like grade school where everyone praises you for being a bright kid even before you do anything.

The world you speak of, where people have to be placed on some kind of pedestal because of their potential, or where everyone understands politics, or where a country is 'obligated' to go to war if they have a nuke is so simplistic.

And I don't need to have that tone? My dear reader, you're the one expressing incredulity at the story and tossing up as many points as you can. Forgive me if I express a similar degree of incredulity. Is there something special about you that means others can't do that to you? You did say maybe you'll get heat. Well guess what, you did.

In the past I would have argued against governments being overtly idiotic, doing completely nonsensical things.

Last 10-15 years tho? Fiction isn't stupid enough.

Exactly. Though honestly this is kind of an aside, since haven't really subscribed to the notion that the manga's kingdom is doing nonsense to begin with, since we haven't seen the higher ups PoV.

From what’s been said in other chapters the kingdom hasn’t been at war since the Elf founded the knights. The Knight commanders have been so powerful since they were founded that nobody dared to attack them. They're basically level 20 DnD character in a world where level 5 is the norm. After all we see the Elf easily beat the guys who slaughtered the knights with ease, she only let them escape because they use dirty tactics.

The fact the elf returned as commander several times might be because there wasn’t anyone strong enough to replace the commander so she stepped up. This would also explain why the knights were so easily defeated, why put in effort when there’s been no conflict for decades.

Also the young knight with the elf straight up called the MC a figurehead after the elf told him the commander was the sole deterrent against invasion. Maybe the next Knight commander is picked by the last to make sure they can defend the kingdom. That's why the normal knights have no idea how strong the MC is.

Time to see why Lienna is considered a WMD. Also yeah it’s likely the current crop of knights don’t know her skills and everyone who did retired. It’s obvious the other countries knew tho
