Well, that's a wrap on Volume 32! See you all for Volume 33, which I believe takes place partially in Australia if I remember right. That'll be interesting since my girlfriend is Australian, so I have a bit more familiarity as a baseline compared to some of the other cuisines that have appeared.
...it's chapters like this that make me hate this manga sometimes. And it's not about Kaibara weasel-wording his way into a rematch to avoid losing face and managing to turn a straight loss into a draw, because Yamaoka's done the same thing, or had others do it in his behalf. (Granted, I still don't like it, but it's a tolerable dislike.) It's that Yamaoka and Kurita are left with the impression once again that Kaibara is an untouchable gourmet god who simply let them win when Kaibara was genuinely backed into a corner and forced to pull a draw. The fact that our heroes don't have that knowledge, that they're left relieved that Kaibara "spared" them when he actually came this close to an outright, genuine, food choice and skill-based loss just pisses me off. That's what makes this chapter so shitty, in my opinion. Unbelievable...

I don’t think you’re wrong at all. One of my biggest issues with doing the TL is that going in, I had only seen about 30 or so episodes of the anime, so the Ultimate VS Supreme battles hadn’t started yet in the anime, and the conflict had Shiro outsmarting Yuzan at least a few times. It is frustrating. I do still like the characters and I want to see how things end (in a manner of speaking), but man, it is hard sometimes.

I remember you saying something like this in a previous chapter, and honestly I agree. Sometimes the win that Kaibara pulls is just absurd. There were times the reason for the loss was due to a mistake that contradicts what Yamaoka should have already known (even if it's chalked up as carelessness, still). Sometimes the reasoning for the verdict from the judges just sounds like total BS.
Like, of course the outcome of the loss is pre-planned by the authors for Plot Reasons That I Cannot Fathom, which I can deal with. I just get annoyed when the win looks like nonsense. I understand that this is an older manga and I noticed that back in the day manga are really treated as more like episodic content and it doesn't really matter even if chapter 1 content contradicts chapter 100. It just still gets frustrating to witness as a reader.

I cannot describe how disappointed I am with the result of this match. Yamaoka was going to be the winner but Kaibara pulled every string to stop him from securing his well-deserved victory.

I was rereading some older chapters and it reaffirms how the win is so often complete BS.
In the contest where they both presented salt baked cooking, Kaibara won and the chapter never explained WHY he won. The judges only blathered some vague nonsense about how the food Kaibara presented had such a deep flavour and doesn't say why or how this is better than Yamaoka's one, especially because Kaibara brought seafood and Yamaoka brought a meat dish, which would be hard to compare.
Kaibara also told Yamaoka that his dish is bad because he only treated the "salt baking as the final step when it should've been the first step". Meanwhile Kaibara literally did the exact same thing. He didn't cook the abalones any further, all he did was salt-bake in a clay pot (as opposed to baking in the oven directly, I guess??) and add a sauce at the end.
Like if they had explained the win better I won't be so mad. Just throw any gobbledegook explanation, and I'd probably accept it since I'm no professional cook. Like "infrared and clay blah blah made the flavour more refines" (like how they keep saying clay pot rice is better than rice cooker rice). Or "the sauce elevated the flavour", like in the vegetable contest. But this made it seem like "Kaibara won just because" and it's stupid.
