It's just a Trope I really hate because imagine if you did it for any other kind of physical disability. Imagine if you walk up to someone with crutches and said "your crutches make you look so ugly you should just get rid of them".

I gotta say I was hoping for more actual villainess and less helping people in need. It's just slipping into the same pattern as almost every other "villainess" manga.
The 90's teen movie makeover of taking off her glasses was a bit much too.

If she'd just said "let's make you unrecognizable" I'd be more willing to play along for the sake of the takedown, but...even that was too easy. It felt a lot like a mid-tier villainess anthology oneshot.

As a person who has needed glasses since I was in grade school, glasses did have a profound effect on my social life. It's not necessarily that they make you ugly, but some people will percieve it as a handicap and ostracize you for it. That in turn causes self-esteem issues which does effect the individual's appearance and outward demeanor.

There were even periods of time growing up that I would intentionally break my glasses just so I wouldn't have to wear them. It was easier to live in a blurry world then face the ridicule of my classmates and people I wanted to call friends.

So yes, the glasses clichés are very much so real. While true it's not always about physical appearance, but I can say from personal experience that there was a stark difference between the kind of attention I recieved when I wore glasses was much different then when I didn't. Even if only because it was easy to ignore when i couldn't see it.

It’s more of an old fashioned problem in Western media and society, where characters who wear them are assumed to be a Neeeeeeeeeerd! In more modern societies, smart people are more respected and short sightedness is better understood, but the trope is still present in some media and influences some people’s perception.

I hate the paired trope where the friend takes the glasses off and miraculously makes them a non-issue.

Well, to some ppl, they could benefit from wearing glasses, not that they must wear them. But then they get bullied about it. And honestly, you could get bullied for about anything and everything anyway. Sometimes wearing glasses make you standout more. And thus bullied more. So it depends I guess.
