I always think it's funny that Yuzan actually has two weaknesses: People who actually have the gall to talk back to him (and can actually back their words), and people like Kurita.

And it just so happens that Kurita is both, and while Yuzan isn't going to immediately grant Kurita's wish, it makes it clear that it's all someone needs to prove that Yuzan isn't as untouchable as everyone thinks, and those qualities of hers do show that Kurita x Yamaoka is the only way going forward.

I had a feeling last chapter that when Kaibara invited Kurita it would be this Rosanjin thing. I saw it was referenced in Ala Carte. Finally I know its context.

Kaibara is a prick. He calls Ohara a coward, but literally HE is the one being a coward. He should have reinvited Ohara to join the club and ask for the materials to his face like a man. And if Ohara says no, keep asking until he says yes. Offer him to get exclusive interviews with VIPs that he has connections with, or treat him to a special dinner, or whatever. Don't be a sneaky bint and use the employees.

Edit: Like, seriously, the more I think about it, the more I'm annoyed with the author letting Kaibara get away with getting things without doing any hard work. Yamaoka and Okaboshi had to put in all that work to help the CEO and the cook put together a good dinner to convince Kyougoku to sell his land. Kaibara should've been made to at least do that much effort himself. The reward that Kurita later asked for from Kaibara is so not worth it.

I always think that, other aspects of the story's writing notwithstanding, Yuzan's characterization after he becomes this Yujiro Hanma-like figure is something Japanese and foreign readers may always disagree on, which often comes as detrimental to the latter.

From what I can find, Japanese readers (both old and seemingly today and in recent years, from what I found on social media) always seem to be so accepting of Yuzan's current characterization because they think Yuzan is this all-wise figure who's just misunderstood and always exudes this kind of wisdom (both blatant and subtle), even when he's acting like this high and mighty POS.

Meanwhile, foreign readers like us may often just find out what's wrong with Yuzan even at first glance, and considering how much the author glazes and shills Yuzan so much, no foreign reader is going to like Yuzan anytime soon, regardless of how much "misunderstood" he is.

The be fair, it could be it's more because Japanese readers are often a bit more detached from what they're reading. So a lot of people, especially casual readers, don't really react emotionally to whatever happens in the chapter. So that attitude may be just because they remember what Kaibara is saying, but gloss over what he's actually doing in his interaction with people.

Like, yeah, I do get that it's part of his character to do whatever he wants in pursuit of excellence of cuisine, and this is just more of that. It's just his smugness irritate me personally. I'm pretty sure even Japanese people would get annoyed if they experience this IRL, they just don't care about Kaibara doing this because it's not real. Also I'm already really angry at the author for other things, and things are more annoying because Kaibara more and more seems like the author's pet self insert/mouthpiece.

It's like those annoying self insert Wattpad/light novel power fantasy stories, just disguised in fancier appearance.

I have mentioned before I prefer early Kaibara because I think overall, his characterization makes more sense when you get the vibe he IS respected...for his food. As a person, nobody can fucking stand him. Like if this was set in the west, most people would call him " a fucking asshole ", many even to his face, I feel. I liked when he was right but the story still went " You SUCK as a person though, mr Yuzan. Every bad egg is right ever so often. "

Removing his nastyness overall (whilst also not retconning outright the nasty stuff. Like in and outside of universe, til we know more, this man killed his wife through exertional abuse. Thats IN the story, regardless of changed characterization.) is why he is such a wonky antagonist. Like whenever a character goes " Hes so brave and cool for wanting food to strive, and you are wrong for not seeing that " I just think " .....Blegh. ".

I think in Baki it does work more because Yujiro is...intentionally written as kind of absurd, so a absurd arc makes...sort of sense for....their sort of reconciliation. Kaibara however is in a setting that ultimately is very low to earth.

Exactly. The way even Yamaoka's "friends" like Ryozo and Kurita are defending him like, "Aw come on he's not that bad" is grating on me. Okay, bruh, no. Just because he still helps people out indirectly sometimes doesn't make him good. He's not the "tsundere" type who is just awkward at being affectionate. He actually is an asshole who only very occasionally still displays some conscience (and still in very asshole-y way too).

Not familiar with that other series you mentioned, but I agree with the sentiment. If this is like some whacky absurdist setting like Ranma or Toriko, I can roll with it. This is ostensibly a semi-normal daily life setting, so him acting like this very glaringly insufferable.

Ah, right. Mentioned Yujiro from Baki the Grappler cus TakesakoKeita did, and it made sense

How to say, Yujiro is basically " What if Akuma from Street Fighter was the protags dad and also so powerful the setting isnt able to apply most modern law and morals to him ". Like Yujiro sucks as a person. He is childish, vain, cruel (in all matters of the word, he does sone fucked shit) and most of the cast does respect him...as a fighter. Because you cant really go up to Yujiro and go " dont be a crook bloke. " He will feel offended you think you are on the level to ORDER him...and then tie your skeleton into a bow. That kind of guy.

He does have Kaibara energy, but the difference is Yujiro still does fucked shit...but he is respected in the one way it makes sense the cast would respect him. For his literal strength and power. The story does still have a undercurrent of " this is a man who sucks. ". Kaibara as a character has lost that vibe mostly and I think its mistake.

I know it's not in anyone mind yet, but in this story chapter they describe you need 160gr of Rice to make a litre of Pure Rice Vinegar. But the major company only used 40gr of rice to create a litre of Rice Vinegar. Isn't the percentage supposed to be 25% instead 27%? Is it from original text?
