Re-read the entire manga after this and I have to say, the author needs to do something about the mental torture the MC has been getting put through the entire series so far, I don’t know if they find it cute or whatever but it’s genuinely way too much, it’s enough to break an adult, let alone a teenage boy with low confidence. Takaomi is like the only good person in his life whose actions and words help him.

You actually have to murder them, sneak in their rooms and bash their skulls, kill that stupid bitch, why are you even in the story, both of you go jumpoff a building.

If y'all want something good with substance go read
I Want To Make The Losing Heroine Win!!
banger rec but honestly for the about 20 chapters that I followed it, it felt more so "satire" than "substance"
can't comment on what happened since though
I'll just check in eventually to see whether the author found a direction for the story or not (something I could also say about this series right now)

Look, I know y'all are gonna blame Mary. Understandable, but honestly? I'd 1000% blame the author for this.

This is so callous man, an absolute giant middle finger from the author. They wanna milk more chapters? Fine, I'm dropping this shit.

Is Miyuki shutting down the conversation supposed to be endearing in a tsun kinda way? Totally misses the mark 😅

Rather than any character, I'm peeved at the author floundering about. Maybe they've genuinely forgotten the difference between Sorata's PoV and the readers'.

Hell, does Sorata's feelings even matter at this point? Or is he just a vehicle for 'missunderstanding' drama/gags. It's one thing to hurt his feelings (again), it's another for him to shrug it off in the span of a few background panels.

After the last fiasco, Sorata musters the courage to set the record straight and unambiguously confesses. What was the point of all that buildup when he gets over getting donowalled so quickly?
Why do I care if he doesn't!?

I also went and read it and mostly agree. Romcoms that are basically gag manga with a romance subplot can be so frustrating. Lies of Sheriff Evans was horrible for that reason, as I got bored of the gag and that was all the story had to offer. At least with I Want to Make the Losing Heroine Win! the story is expanding rather than repeating.

We also just got a potentially big plot reveal concerning the protagonist and why he's so convinced that he's living in a romcom world where Ei-kun is the "MC".

So while it is very much a deconstructivist story when it comes to romcom tropes, it's still taking itself seriously and telling a story that stands on its own merit, I think.
The trope-flipping is the hook, yes; but I've found myself liking it more and more as the plot progresses simply for the characters and their stories being told.

Author-San blue Ballz harder than Rent-a-Girlfriend. I share sentiment above that no one here is likeable anymore. ML is a spineless simp, FL is an arrogant and selfish biatch, her brother is scum, probably her whole family is scum, and everyone else is just an annoying puppy with sprinkles. I've dropped this before and came back because responses to my comments had made me revisit and hit several chapters at once, which works better than the monthly dip of frustration. Plus there are the part chapters. I think I'll drop it again, since the payoff is never going to be worth it now.

What is the point of this? Like you don't get the satisfaction of her properly replying but it is also clear enough what she started to say that it shouldn't really maintain the status quo of him not knowing whether she likes him.

Yeah. This should have ended with this volume, and now we're getting at least one more, and with how the author's seemingly milking the central conflict at this point, I doubt we're stopping there.
I enjoyed the premise, but I'm of the opinion now that this needs another female character to come along and make a serious play for Sorata. Maybe someone from his childhood in Tokyo that he got along reasonably well with back in primary school, who moved away, and transfers back in at the start of 3rd year, or something.

Miyuki needs a fire lit under her ass, and since I know she won't lose at the end because the author's committing to this Vega & Altair iteration, I absolutely want to see her freak out and come close to losing Sorata after all the bullshit she's pulled in the name of "muh Kyotoisms & Embarrassment". Also Merry needs to be thrown off a bridge. Not fatally, but just enough to make her realize the error in her existence.

I don't like dropping series; call it falling victim to the Sunk Cost fallacy. But I'm honestly losing patience with this one.
Sorata deserves better. I cannot believe he was just fully sidelined after the 3rd page and we got nothing of his reaction and he's apparently just "along for the ride", after ALL of what's transpired just in this Kyoto arc.

I shouldn't be this upset over a stupid story. But.
Normally, I wouldn't ask for it if the progression between paired characters is going well enough ... but after THIS?

Yeah, as shallow and territorial it may sound, some competition may actually be necessary here, because she's just that obnoxious.

Sorata also needs to (and deserves to) learn what it's like to be truly & actually valued, expressed to his face. Miyuki hasn't done that; arguably the only person who has is Takaomi, and I'm pretty certain we're not swerving into BL with this series, as much as I think it would actually improve things.

But Sorata's gotten the short end of the stick since way back when they were kids; not only was his future decided for him by a couple old farts, he still earnestly put his all into trying to learn about Miyuki and make her happy, and we're now more than a decade on and he's been reduced to:

  • enduring constant low-level harassment from all of their peers at school who at best don't believe they're engaged, and at worst actively deride him and his poor showing compared to her superhuman capability;
  • being vilified by Merry/Mary, who ostensibly should have warmed up to him more by now, but is still met with hostility whenever she deludes herself into thinking Miyuki's being hurt by Sorata;
  • being effectively conditioned and manipulated by Ayano into believing that Miyuki despises him, and that everything she says to him is a backhanded insult because of the dialect issue;
  • putting himself down and working himself to the bone to try and measure up to Miyuki, because everyone around him (save Takaomi) tells him he's not good enough. Even when they were at the cafe in Kyoto and Miyuki's old friends showed up being like "surely this wimp isn't your boyfriend, also why did you go to such a shitty school?" and he had to stand up for Miyuki, while she said nothing in his defense.
Sorata doesn't have the allies he should in this series, as even Takaomi only ever really tries to help him when they're alone, and gets run over by both Miyuki and Merry otherwise...plus, he has his own stuff to deal with, being a child actor who gets recognized and accosted whenever they go somewhere together.

I'm not a fan of romantic rivals, but that's because they're generally there to shove drama into a narrative that doesn't often need it in that specific manner. But here?
Sorata should have someone who sees him for all the good that he is and does, and who will validate him to his face in no uncertain terms. I'm not going to be an idiot and wish for Miyuki to actually lose in the romance game being played, because that is a fool's errand what with how perfect she's written and how hopelessly in love with her Sorata is. But I fully admit that I want her to suffer watching Sorata be happy around someone else who isn't afraid to say what they mean and treat him with actual respect and dignity, even if the end result is Miyuki finally pulling her head out of her asshole and making up her mind as to whether Sorata actually means anything to her, and then acting like it's the case.

Shortened for readability. I agree with everything you said. I don't understand how some posters here think that Sorata is a wimp. Certainly, he's a shy, quiet boy with self-confidence issues. But so what? He tries and has been trying for over 10 years. Nobody is perfect, but he tries. And that's a a lot.

But the author is hell-bent on making Miyuki really unlikable with this recurring, neverending "gag" that she can't say anything. And almost everyone around is part of the problem and behaves as an asshole. A relationship requires both sides to make a serious effort, or else it's not a relationship.

I do agree that a romantic rival, even if just a superficial and small one, might actually be needed here to move the plot along. If I were Sorata, honestly, I'd be at my limit with how little feedback I get. Him not having a clue of what Miyuki really thinks, after all this, is horrible.

100% agree. This is maddening.

Look at from inside the characters... just the whole "oh I just re-confessed my love for you, and you brushed it off, and now just moved onto whatever's next..." yeah no. That's that for me man.

We need a "dreaming realist" wake up moment for our boy here. Something that she says, even just thinking she's "joking around" with her friends, that makes him go "... what am I doing?"

Imagine you get a chapter where he's still chasing her, and it ends with her being pressured by her friends to be derisive of him (not fully Mean, since she's not against him, but just... puts him down in a joke because she's embarrassed). And at the end of the chapter, it shows him walking away from having overheard it.
Next chapter then becomes just on him reflecting over what's happened the past few months, all these little moments where he's tried his best only for her to brush him off because she's "too embarrassed" to treat him like a real person and respond to his honest feelings.
From there, you could get an entire arc of him kind of pulling away. Lookin to himself, seeing what HE wants to do with his life. What are his hobbies, what is he like aside from her? Could even have a tension where the family is in his side because they are tired of her leading him along (or just tired of her not taking things seriously when he clearly was).
Maybe add a romantic rival, maybe don't. Either way you have an interesting arc of him walking back, and it can lead into an arc where it's about her figuring herself out, and chasing after HIM in exchange. Maybe she tries to ask him on a date, but he's busy and doesn't realize what she's asking because she's not being clear. Have this happen until she is open and honest, and THEN he'll respond.

I would LOVE to see something like that. Not in a mean, "revenge" way, but just... realistic.
We’ll never get it because in Japan that have this weird thing where it comes to women in romance. They can literally get away with anything and barely get consequences from it unless it’s a revenge story. So many stories where the fmc “bestie” gets more play than the mc and gets to berate him with fmc. A lot of ass kissing the protags have to do and honestly I hate masochist. That weird sub servant shit that been going on recently with mc is so ass which makes read yuri or shoujo because they don’t ass kiss or cheat on there partners
