As far as "cute" goes, I agree that in the UK it only has the one innocent meaning that relates to kids, so to say a kid looks cute would not be misconstrued. We use bigger grown-up words when we are trying to flatter the ladies.

Eh, you can chalk that one up to the translation. The most common word used for boyfriend/girlfriend relationships is "koibito", literally "love person", so amateur translators almost invariably default to "lovers" for it. It's not strictly speaking correct (since it doesn't convey quite the same meaning, as you explained) but it gets the work done most of the time.
