As far as "cute" goes, I agree that in the UK it only has the one innocent meaning that relates to kids, so to say a kid looks cute would not be misconstrued. We use bigger grown-up words when we are trying to flatter the ladies.


The other word that always throws me is calling someone your "lover" even if you have not slept with them. In Britain, your lover is someone you are having sex with. So when you read "Of course you can call me by my first name, since we are lovers" and they have barely held hands, it gets a hard eye-roll from me.
