All true, but as they are respectively a former demon lord, though utterly incompetent, and a crooked hero who has evaded capture for the majority of the story, I would expect a minimum level of animal cunning with which to avoid fatal errors.

I would consider checking the hole which exposes their escape route open a bare minimum task towards keeping them selves safe.
