Sounds to me like these idiots are grasping at whatever straws they can to stay pissed off.
They don't want peace, they want racism.
Not necessarily. Maybe a few, but more than likely, everyone is just scared with an actual reason to be so. Imagine this, there is a very deadly plague that just being near it can infect you as its airborn. Currently, the airborn particles and those infected are being somewhat contained within specific areas thanks to an overwhelming difficult effort by the nation. But the majority of the infected are actively pushing back, hoping to break out of containment so they can kill you all.
For your entire life, you have been told and have maybe even seen what happens to those who are not able to live while being infected become exposed to the plague. And you have been told countless times to avoid those infected people at all costs, as in don't even think about going near them, or else your life may be at risk.
Then suddenly, it is revealed to you by the nice lady working at the store you often frequent with your children, that she is a knowing carrier of said plague. But she then tells you not to worry, as she and her husband have a way to keep it under control, using something they created in private. Oh, and she is also apparently a member of a special forces unit.
You are being told to accept and trust that the seemingly normal looking couple running a general store, are not only special forces, but have also created methods to visibly identify the location of the nornally invisible plague particles, as well as a way to contain and eliminate them quickly and easily too.
you are being asked to trust that this kind of ground breaking technology, which until now, has not been able to be done in the entirity of human history outside of using purification magic that often incapacitates people to cast just a single time, was somehow just created by the man normally selling you lemons and simole hand-made tools for daily life use. He isn't some kind of researcher or wizard, and to your knowledge, is not some kind of mad scientist or crazy alchemist either. He is just a normal dude who somehow has the answer to humanity's greatest threat literally in the palm of his hands.
That is an incredibly hard pill to swallow on short notice. It's equally hard to just continue trusting someone who has been actively lying to you about their wife and children's identities for a very long time too.
