Lol 😆 your evil villain monologue is hilarious. It was my opinion not trying to force anything. Just a spin I would like to see. Because Japan is so fixated with wish fulfillments. They do not have stories to deal with real world problems. FYI this was taken from my life. Thank you 👍 for say my life sucks. Lol 🤣 🤣 🤣
Unironically yes, that does suck.

Literally everyone is "fixated on wish fulfillment", not a Japan thing. As you said, life sucks, so why the fuck would you want to see more depressing shit? You can still have a good story and lesson to teach without misery porn.

Thank you for the translation!

I can just tell that MC being an uber spazz is going to be exhausting. I can KINDA see why she would be into him… but yikes. Hopefully bro chills out at some point soon.
Big agree its the most annoying shit ever. Its permissible if they start out that way and get better later but the entire trope just grinds my gears.I tried reading "Stop! I'm falling for you" and the mc literally stutters every single word and can't say a single sentence, actually unreadable.

Honestly it could be as simple as "he is nice and is always helping me out and now i got too used to having him around and enjoy his company" and him just being "she is nice to me and really cute". I know people that got together at high school for similar and even weaker reasons and are still together almost 20 years later. Author has to at least show good chemistry. Two characters than dont really know each other yet being "perfect for each other" is one hell of a tired trope. Kinda boils down to bad writing tbh.

I think what rubs me wrong about the "I like them because they're nice to me" rationale is because it feels self-serving. That's just someone you want around because they make you feel good, or they do things that make life easier for you. That can certainly be enough, and it's not even indicative of a person's desire to "use" another. But it feels shallow, like she only likes him because he solves problems for her, but the moment he didn't or couldn't she'd lose interest, type thing.
Which dovetails into the "chemistry" facet you mentioned, yes--I just think there needs to be something more, that's built on who they are and what they mean to one another on a more fundamental level beyond "I like that he makes life easier for me" or "she's a senpai who is cute and nice (other than the apparent constant teasing/cajoling)".

Right now, she's a senpai who apparently gets a kick out of teasing him, which I would think does little to help his anxiety now that they're not together, and he's second-guessing and overthinking every moment he's around her while wanting to "stay away" but then going out of his way to prolong every interaction they have. Maybe that will transform into something more meaningful as the backstory fills out and we see more interactions, but he's so nerve-addled that I'm just struggling to understand what she actually sees in him outside of any utilitarian benefit. We're a mere two chapters in, so I will certainly allow for growth in the narrative and the character-driven dynamic between them, but two chapters doing the same "bit" right at the outset makes me wonder.

A really compelling development could be if he were bullied and basically peer pressured to dump her by envious classmates. I've also seen that irl and could be a good story to tell. Basically getting over bullying and peer pressure to realize thats just bullshit and desnt matter so go be happy with your girl. They both seem to be a good influence on each other, so the only realistic place the author has to explore is the reason why they broke up and how they mend those wounds.
(Please, author, don't let it just be the simple trope UdenEmpati said where nothing gets developed)

I'd be down if he were forced into it by jealous/upset classmates, yes. That would at least allow for him to have not wanted to break up with her, and would mean that they both have an active desire to see something rekindle between them.

I'm not sure if that's the case, however, as I do feel like part of his internal monologue would have referenced that by this point. The FL wouldn't necessarily need to be aware of that sort of reason, as part of the stipulation imposed on him by those classmates could be that he breaks up, but that he "makes up a reason", or something, so that the FL isn't aware that it was jealous boys who pushed the ML into ending things. However, we the readers wouldn't need that sort of information hidden from us, to keep the plot and premise compelling. Arguably, it'd be imperative to know--because as it stands, the ML seemingly embodies the very qualities that those classmates apparently decided meant he wasn't worthy of the FL. And, he was in middle school for an entire year between that point and the start of this manga, while she had moved on to high school. So that's a year for him to figure himself out a bit, and instead he is seemingly as bad as he ever was when it comes to anxiety and awkwardness and so on.

So if he just overheard gossip/mean-spirited opinions from classmates and freaked out, thought to himself "she shouldn't be with me because she'll be hurt by what they say", and then broke up with her all on his own because of that....then I would be less enthused. There's still a story in there, potentially, of him coming to understand that he doesn't have to listen to or care about the opinions of others, and that hers is more important than anyone's but his own. I don't like it as much, because he starts from an even worse place than he would otherwise, but it would represent growth on his part, which is what I ultimately care about.
But I mostly want more from her side of things. Because right now, she's incredibly one-dimensional (he is too, but we also have his internal monologue & narration/side of past events). She's just the 'cool beautiful senpai' who spends every interaction with him in full on Teasing Mode, calling him a pervert while throwing herself at him, and is somehow apparently interested in him after a year-long separation and after they'd broken up.
She's got looks, popularity, and is clearly "above" him in most metrics that school kids care about when appraising this stuff (him included, clearly), so her still being fixated on him needs one hell of a reason behind it--because as I said above, "he's nice and does things for me" really doesn't cut it.

That's not a boyfriend, that's a gofer, and that would make for a godawful ending if they got back together on those grounds alone with nothing else from her side of things.

I will say that that series really picks up, and I'd argue handles the trope really quite well. I don't know where you stopped chapter-wise, but I would suggest maybe giving it a chance up to the where it's currently at because the ML has some surprising growth (that's shown, more than told, even).
Obviously that's just my take on it, but I'm of a mind when it comes to that sort of characterization, and I will vouch for that series in impressing me with how he's changed from the beginning.

Does it get played off as comedy? Is that the com of rom-com here? Because if so, it’s not funny. It’s irritating. You and I are polar opposites does a far better job of being a romantic comedy without being irritating as hell

Japan puts a strong emphasis on public appearances. She's already getting attention for her looks, and chapter 1 implies she was rather popular back in middle school. Popular enough that their relationship was the subject of mean-spirited gossip, implied to be why they broke up. So he's already been burned by public perception once and is now trying very hard to avoid anything that would put him in the public eye again.

Do not underestimate high schoolers, especially in manga. They can be judgmental little shits, and besides gossip and ostracization there are occasions where threats of violence are on the table if the popular half of the couple has a big enough fanbase.

Chapter 1 implies that he and the FMC were the subject of cruel gossip. To the point that people thought it was "embarrassing" for the FMC to be dating someone like the MC, who was even more bookish back in middle school. Between that and the awkwardness on display here, it more or less screams that at the very least he had no confidence in himself as her partner. I wouldn't be surprised if he broke up with her out of a misaimed attempt to spare her the humiliation of getting dragged down by him, but I suspect there's more to it than that.

As for why she's the one pursuing him? Escapism. Gotta remember that manga are essentially Japanese comic books; much like seeing Superman save the day or Batman using his vast fortune to fight crime, it fulfills a fantasy for the reader. In this case, the MC is one of those "nothing special" guys (that many Japanese readers feel like they can relate to) being pursued by an attractive older woman. Hopefully there's more to it than that in terms of writing and character depth, but that's the meta reason for her pursuit of him.

And exactly why it's not a story such as what you described. Cause while that might make for a good bittersweet story... Fuckin' Hell man, it sounds depressing as fuck. Never mind all the ignorant masses who would be screaming about NTR, the MC being a beta-male, and slut-shaming the FMC...
No. I want my Japanese manga to have American values and perspectives

Damn that's a rare well made comment. I agree with everything but this part.
I still mostly agree with you here, but honestly, itd be super scummy of her if it were just teasing. This chapter is good evidence she knows him well, teasing him like that in this context is pretty mean spirited to say the least. Itd be a bit validated to say she cucked him after leading him on like that. Itd be one thing if she moved on and he was chasing her, he'd be in the wrong there for sure.

It heavily implied she has strong feelings for him still and most likely missed him a lot. Her friend commenting on her unusual preparedness and MC being the reason she was prepared goes well with the "he/she completes me" trope which adds even more evidence to the obvious ending of them getting back together stronger than before.
Oh I'm referring not to the plot itself, but the person I responded to and their thought that the manga shouldn't have the two get back together. That the MC should have to "deal with the consequences" of his actions, including seeing her end up with another guy, wrestling with the feelings of that happening, and then trying to move on. Which could make for a mature, compelling, bittersweet story.

....With a bunch of comments that would be yelling about the aforementioned subjects without any regard for nuance or emotional complexity.

as caricaturish as you've put it, this is authentically how a lot of people look at foreign media
it's why some people were mad kingdom come deliverance was both too historical and too czech, and the witcher too polish, and should have been made more american

I think this would have been better if they don't get back together. It was probably completely his fault for their break up. Why does she have to make the effort to get back together? He needs to realize his insecurities cost him a better life. If we could see his reaction to her get a new boyfriend. Him be depressed about it. Show the readers how he deals with it. Then finally coming to terms. Finding someone else because he screwed up his first relationship. and there is no second chance. Learn from his mistakes and treat people better than he did his ex. You can't change the past only learn from it and move forward to the future. 🤔
While I get what you're saying, I think you're right in assuming that it isn't gonna happen lmao. They are sooooo gonna get back together.

Did they really break up? Or is it all just a huge misunderstanding from Ritsu (as in, Tsuzura still thinks that they're dating and isn't even aware that Ritsu currently thinks otherwise)?

I think the whole ex-girlfriend angle doesn't really land when their relationship is from when they were middle schoolers. Having an ex-girlfriend, in a meaningful sense, is something that happens in adulthood. An immature nothingburger relationship you had at middle school is not really something that carries dramatic impact.

eh, depends on the relationships. some people have sexual relationships in middle school, and my own middle school girlfriend ghosted me irl. as in literally would one day act like I wasn't there and wouldn't answer when spoken to. if she'd have tried getting back with me in high school there sure would have had to be some explaining to do :wooow:

You make some valid points. It can certainly be very self serving, but it can also just simply be enjoying their company with no strings attached. Both are quite common in real life and in fiction.
"Tsukkomi-machi no Machino-san" is a good example of what I had in mind when I said "he is nice and I like his company". It even has the social hierarchy imbalance that applies in this manga, though less of an age gap. Key difference is they have genuine chemistry and both really like the company of the other without the mean spirited self serving part. Its just fun to hang out together and they understand each other intuitively.

This manga certainly suffers from the classic one dimensional heroine that loves me for no reason and a plain self insert MC. This aggressive teasing gets old real quick if there isnt any of the development you describe. I hadn't thought of the "just a gofer" side and frankly it really does look that way.

The author showed some skill at subtext and showing more sides than the simple waifu self insert slop, so I hope we can get some good developments soon. Though plenty have ruined a good foundation into irrelevance so who knows. Story is at least more interesting than average at this early stage so theres hope for it yet

Bro i never even mentioned ntr when replying to you... you sound deranged. How old are you even? 12 year olds shouldnt be on random internet forums.

Its like you hallucinate a bunch of shit I never said. Do you just want interaction and people to talk to you? You can do that without "setting up bait".

Gotcha, I can see that could be a good story about having to live and grow up with the choices you've made. Everyone experiences regret at one point, especially in romance. My point was just that this story in particular has a horrible foundation to tell that story. Unless the point was that the character are just awful people. In which case that would be a story I detest, enough shitty people and depressing shit irl for me to want to read about it lol

As you said, the nuance and complexity are what matters in making that story work. This one in specific isnt built for that since she clearly wants him back.
