She backed off because she saw he hesitated on saying who he loved. Also he said he gave up thinking she had a boyfriend and you don't try to obsess over someone you have given up on. His love for her now is definitely not as much as before, if she forced an answer, it would have been over for her for good.

Here's the best I can explain what's going on between the two based on what I understood, from ch. 1 until this point. Please note that characters other than the senpai and the MC will not be mentioned much.

Early Tl;Dr: he thought his crush(he didn't know she was a model yet) had a boyfriend, became a vtuber to get over her, his vtuber Sona became her oshi, they did a photoshoot together after comiket, found out the other person is their senpai/kouhai, and started over as just friends

First meeting

Yuki, The MC, first met with the senpai in the literature club. At the time, she already had a modeling job the MC didn't know about at the time, and over time they got closer, she also sometimes think of how cute he is, and he started having a crush on her.

Misunderstanding

One day, she got called by the modeling agency vice president who is also her manager (the one with middle partition two colored hair) because the model who's supposed to show up couldn't(forgot why), and said manager picked her up after school. Seeing this, the MC was heartbroken and started avoiding her, and she felt bad because he never came back to the club room.

Shirahime Yuka

He then thought of becoming a vtuber to make himself feel better and because it's a common interest between the two of them. He spent half of the million yen given to him by his parents for his setup and the other half for the model. After a misgendering hiccup and some preparation including an introduction video, he made his debut as Shirahime Yuka

Offline Collabs and accidental gender reveal

After his vtuber persona blew up in popularity, he started doing collabs with Yuru-mama and Fuwarin(I literally just re-read the entire manga from ch 1 until 20 and I already forgot her vtuber name). On ch 14, the MC is having an offline Collab with yuru-mama, and yuki(who is still dressed up as yuka) accidentally outed himself to be a boy(which I didn't remember but that's literally what cute people can do), but his fans still supported him because he is cute regardless. Around the same time, his senpai started thinking if the one behind Yuka is the kouhai that stopped showing up after that day.

Comiket and revelation

During the 3 days in comiket, Yuki cosplayed as Yuka in person wearing the three outfits that'll be modeled for him to use in the future, two gothic lolita outfits and a cat pajamas. On the first day the senpai bought the ASMR yuki made but she was sad because she went on the wrong line, and the other two days spent fully on cosplaying. After the comiket, the modeling agency the senpai is affiliated with asked the MC to substitute for a model who was supposed to be there but had an accident. After the photoshoot, the MC and senpai bumped into each other outside of the men's changing room; he realized his senpai is the model he had a photoshoot with and her oshi is her kouhai.

Restarting their friendship

After they calmed down, he confessed that he loved her but stopped because he thought she was taken, but she cleared up that misunderstanding by telling him that was her manager. She asked him if he liked anyone now and he said doesn't know quite yet, she then told him that she liked him but is unsure if it's platonic or romantic, so she asked to start again as friends
