Hotpot! For diaspora Chinese like me, hotpot is an indispensable component of the Chinese New Year. It's when the whole family gets together at a large table and eats of the same pot. In that sense, the hotpot is actually quite similar to an American Christmas turkey dinner.

Fun fact about the hotpot: In Southeast Asia, many people refer to hotpot as 'steamboat'. The reason for this, or at least the one that's popularly accepted, is that early hotpot pots had this 'smokestack' in the middle that's reminiscent of a steamboat's chimney.

so excited for this showdown, I love hotpot. Sukiyaki is probably my personal favourite, the sweet and savory broth is so addictive.

Absolutely. Hotpot is just the most common one. Pork dishes are fairly popular, like roast pork belly or vinegared pork trotters. You could find roast chicken, roast duck, even fish. Some families observe religious vegetarianism for the New Year's morning, so you'll also find vegetarian noodles or soy-based vegetarian meats.
For dessert, there's tang yuan, dragon's whiskers soup (a dessert soup containing a frilly fungus type thing), and various types of bao.
