Never heard of spiders coming with gifts, (most are not built for it and it's not really practical to be hauling anything when most cases of cannibalism occur on detection - gotta be quick to beat feet in case of aggression) but opportunistic mating, when the female is feeding or otherwise distracted, is common in many species. Also, males of some species improve their chances of not becoming snacks after the fact by practising the arachnid equivalent of BDSM - they wrap the female's legs in silk during the act to slow them down. So yeah, Toda might be wise to get himself several pairs of pink handcuffs .
