So this is total speculation, not supported in any way by the story yet, wild theory, but since we just got this lore...

We've been assuming the Big Bad guy gathering the yokai to attack the town (mister protagonist hair) is a yokai, but what if he's a human descendant of that bad second lord who has some grudge about how they didn't help while there was a famine? Okay, 400 years is a little long to take for revenge, but that would be very Japanese.

Hard to believe any descendant would take a story about a village of yokai foxes seriously or care much for people who lived centuries ago. That would take some insane upbringing of him and all his ancestors since Edo. After all, all it would take is one who decided "screw this crap!" and moved on to something productive for the supposed grudge to fizzle out. :pacman:

Anyway, isn't the fox village far outside the city? What region does he even suspect of being cursed land? The entire city? The whole prefecture? The famine was widespread after all, so it does not make sense to single out the specific area Goro lives in...

Also, now that you've announced it, there better be a chapter about pimping out the shrine. :meguusmug:

That would certainly fit the narrative as well on why the calamities were so devastating, as the shapeshifting foxes would be seen as abandoning humans in a period considered to be most devastating.

I went to read up on the Kan'ei famine after this chapter, and holy crap, they really couldn't catch a break.

Volcano eruption that had ashes falling on the land, followed by a cycle of drought, heavy rains, then frost made agriculture impossible. Resulting in some places resorting to infanticide and lending out older children to become slaves just to be fed, further leading to permanent slavery. :notlikethis:

I hope the manga touches on all of this, and how a grudge lasted for centuries as you said.

It's probably just me, but characters like Aoi rub me the wrong way. How they look, act, I don't know, but I'm always expecting them to do something shady.
Yeah, it's like the one Captain in Kaiju No 8 - bowl cut + fox eyes = shady! That may be on purpose here.

He's been very vague with the exact geography... Some suburb of Tokyo near some mountains, which is why I think it's west Tokyo area. It's called 'Hobara Town/City' but like the note said there is no Hobara with those kanji anywhere in Japan. And we don't know how exactly how far Hobara City is from Fox Village but Fox Village is considered part of the jurisdiction. Which kind of makes sense - all the wilderness near a town is considered part of a town unless there's another closer town.

Whoa that's a lot or lorebuilding.
Now I want Aoi getting to know Goro and recommending him as a guardian. "Just make him one and let me go home".
Hahaha Mogami fading away!

isn't he a yokai himself? I think he may be that vanquished oni or his descendant. That would explain his animosity towards kitsune.
Thanks for the chapter.

me too but I'm trying my best to fight this feeling. Let's see Aoi for who he really happens to be

@sarusa, You seem to be missing a word in the almost last sentence: "starving certainly it". Are you missing a "do"?

Also, whats up with Doji-san's hair. That peak?! its super bad this chapter.

Another option, which is every bit as much speculation, based on some surface level studying on some aspects of Shinto, could be that the sneaky antagonist making his moves here and there might also be the previous kami, corrupted and furious by what had happened and the other kami seemingly just ignoring the incident, possessing the body of his last priest who had been dying until he stepped in.

There is a tradition of living kami and priests / miko undergoing rituals (such as the kagura) to call the kami to them and possess them so that they could embody the kami for the rest of the ritual. What if that's what happened here, just with more impurities that twisted the previous kami?

That could explain why the region's Kami just vanished, along with someone who could have tried to report to the other kami what happened.

Sure enough, thanks, fixing!

And yeah, Doji is imagining himself with hip, modern hair, by which he means 1970s.

too quiet, and narrow eyes are usually to depict villains in manga...

The history with the town with the fox village feels very like the "Statue of secrecy" from Harry Potter when the supernatural has a falling out with the non magical society and decides it's best to self segregate until the other side is ready or to reveal themselves if they feel like it. And seeing the famine, it's no wonder they either stopped caring or forgot about the foxes.

Make Goro the land god. He's a workaholic anyway.
That would make for a unique set-up making a regular human a god instead of a supernatural entity, one I have never seen before.
