In this chapter... Avan gives a child a loaded gun. But on a more serious note, Avan's entire quest to the cave of trials was off-screen. I believe this may be because they plan to show us Avan's journey right up through the end of the original series, so maybe a year or so from now, we'll get to see his full expedition into the cave of trials while everyone else thinks him dead.

I am also quite glad that facial hair only lasted for a single chapter... it did not look good on you Avan, honey.

And next weekend I'll be out of town for a concert in NYC, so it will be a few days late on Sunday when I get back instead of Friday.

so the date would be on the eleventh I can wait that long and seeing maams graduation ceremony reminds me of the show and I wondered how much time passed while Avan was in the cave of trials

The general consensus among the fanbase is that she's around 8-ish. The timeline as I can tell it

Dai-15 = start of series
Dai-14 = Maam is born/spell of frozen time
Dai-13 = Hadlar dies
Dai-12 = traveling with Hyunckel
Dai-12 through Dai-10 or -9 = Avan if frozen again (2 or 3 years per Hihi)
Dai-9 = Avan meets a 5 to 6 year old Maam

Maam certainly seems older than 6 in this chapter, but that beard is also not long enough to be 2 years of growth (granted, even if he couldn't shave he could've still trimmed it). I'm inclined to believe she is around 8 years old and we are T-minus 7 years the OG series.

That being said, there will be another time-skip at the end of this volume and from what I can recall, and no specific year or date was given for this Maam time period.

Is it just me or Maam feels noticeably more impressive as a kid than she was in the early main series?
I'd chock it up to the direction of her character not being fully known at the start of the series. While she was never shown as outright weak, the idea of her having enhanced physical power from her father was only really brought to light after the Flazzard arc, where she left to train with Brokeena. Since she's supposed to have this strength inherently, we gotta show her with martial prowess in the past, even if it no longer matches her original appearance.

I guess that’s it, Hadlar is another pretty obvious example of a character that got developped a lot beyond what his early og Dai writing intended.

In general, the whole Hadlar vs Avan era got handwaved into a tiny flashback at the start and was mere set up, so as a result the powerlevels finds a little underwhelming compared to everything we got in this prequel that clearly attempted to make this era feels like a bigger deal, even if not on the level of the main questline by concept.

Still, the prequel has so far shown that Avan hasn’t been sitting on his butt for 15 years, even when accounting for the petrified skip, and he keeps looking pretty impressive when if you take in account main Dai, he’s barely around the level of resurrected Hadlar who gets multiple powerups from there and still keeps getting humiliated routinely until he becomes a Superior Being, and even then he gets completely destroyed by a serious Dragonoid Baran. Base Mystveear should be able to kill Avan with no difficulty whatsoever but he avoided doing so?

While this is justification for justification's sake, we could say that the Dragon Knight is simply that much of an anomaly in this world. Even the hero, who has spent several years perfecting his craft, and the demon king, resurrected with even greater power, are no match for the soldier specially crafted by the three gods of the realm. Even incomplete, Dai has power that wouldn't normally exist in this world, so he dwarfs the conflicts of the past (though this is all in hindsight).

As for Mystvearn, I'd like to see it as Vearn holding his resources until absolutely necessary, both as a sign of arrogance and as a way to build up/test Hadlar. If he thought Avan (or Dai) to be a threat too great, he could have sent Mystvearn early on, or even went himself. However, throughout the entire series, he only ever viewed Baran as a potential threat to his final plan, so with him under his command, he had no fear of extra threats. These "lesser threats" could be used as an obstacle in order to make Hadlar stronger, even if the other commanders fall along the way. So long as Vearn still had his own strength, nothing would stop his plans, and that arrogance is what eventually led to his defeat.

I think part of it could be that Avan was just mistaken to give ma'am the gun to make up for her spellcasting shortcomings.

No one expects that one character be able to do everything and be perfectly balanced in all things. Avan should have seen her physical strength and geared her towards a warrior path.

Instead he saw her absence of offensive magic and tried to fix that. But if Maam were in a full party, someone else would be the offensive spellcaster. She presumably wouldn't be adventuring alone.

This mistake set her back. Beokeena fixed it.

Thinking about her training focusing on an absence rather than her main strength brings something immediately to mind: he wanted her to be a hero, like the actual class.

Heroes have great physical strength, offensive magical capabilities, and can even use healing magic. Maam already had 2/3 from her parents, so Avan wanted her to be able to Dragon-Quest-1-it if need be.

Not to mention, even if he didn't specifically have hero skills, Hyunkel was clearly reaching a level where he could adventure independently, and Avan knew that. Substitute a magic gun for plenty of herbs and you've got another psuedo-hero. It wasn't until he had a student that was actually hero-class that he got close to his ideal, and even then he still couldn't use healing magic.
