Dang.. Ik author really needs MC to get a grip sooner or later, but didn't expect in this older brother arc. I just hope this won't be dragged out too long, or I'll fkin' hate it.

the onus is ultimately on Tohno to reject his trauma's lies and believe in the memories and experiences he's developed with her.
That's the thing, it is not a lie. Every single time with literally every other person that has gotten close to him in the same way as Houjou has ultimately betrayed him. We've been shown that multiple times already.

Houjou is literally THE exception to the rule. We the reader know for certain she is the exception, but Youta does not have that same certainty. He has a strong idea she is different, but not to the same degree we do having read the conversation houjou was having with rei.
If everytime you touch fire it burns and hurts, you pretty quickly learn to stop touching it. Then one day you come across a small campfire that doesn't emit much heat if any. You bet your ass nobody sane will just go stick their hand in that fire. Even if its safe and is pleasantly warm, its still a fire and you've learned all your life fire burns and hurts.

Pretty damn hard to get rid of a fear thats been proven true countless times before. Even if its not true this one time, its still justified fear. Overcoming it and accepting the one exception is the whole point of this story

Careful Rei defenders are coming in hot right now. I understand Rei isn't antagonist of this manga. But it's stupid to not admit that he's worst big brother ever existed.

Like I don't understand, either people here are single child or worst big brother/sister to their sibling. Because I as a big brother, can see how much of an idiot Rei is. And how he ruined the life of his own beloved brother and didn't even try to search for any reason that changed Youta into sad, insecure and gloomy guy.
As a middle brother myself, he's average dude. It's genuinely not his obligation to go digging to find out everything going wrong in his brothers life and try to fix it. If he knew the problems he was indirectly causing, sure, he'd suck if didn't do anything about that. But he doesn't know, Tohno didn't tell him or anyone else except his two friends shit. If anyone should help it's Yukimura, she just noticed something was wrong, was 100% correct about what it was, and then said nothing about it. She's not obligated to either of course, but if you blame Reiya you gotta blame Yukimura and Houjou too

Nice selective editing. In the three pages right before Reiya showed up and she had zero blush on her face. Houjou only blushed when he approached her and started chatting.

Look at how she’s looking at Reiya in the middle of page 8. I don’t think it’s strange for Youta to be unhappy about the girl he likes looking at another guy with that expression.

What are you even talking about? The content of their conversation was never in question. Are you implying that I said they were flirting or something? If so, I think it’s you that needs to work on their reading comprehension.

What I said was that I think she’s physically attracted to Reiya. I don’t understand why so many people are so obsessively opposed to that possibility. He’s objectively attractive and she has eyeballs.

It doesn’t mean she’s going to jump ship to Reiya or that she now likes him more than Youta. The end result though is that Youta noticed her unconscious response to Reiya. The girl he thought might be different isn’t as different as he hoped she was.

So did she follow him to this volunteer activity because she wanted to do something together with Youta, or did she never plan on actually spending time together in the first place?

I get that she’s “different” and aloof sometimes but that also means she’s unconsciously insensitive as well.
Been reading your comments and I feel the need to ask what your point even is cause it seems like all you're saying is that Izumi's a bit physically attracted to Reiya (Your evidence for which, sucks btw) and I don't even see how that's relevant to the story in the slightest unless you're actually saying she wants to get closer to Reiya purely because of attraction, regardless of if she consciously used Youta for that. And imo the only reason that would be the case from a writing perspective is to create conflict between Izumi and Youta. Which isn't a problem in and of itself, but I don't think it's possible to write that well. What's she gonna say, "Yeah I'm attracted to your brother and unintentionally abused my relationship with you to get closer to him but I think I like you" That'd be very difficult to write well without making Izumi just an incredibly insensitive, cruel and unreasonable person. Which she isn't. Airheaded maybe, but never thoughtless to the point of harming someone else.

It's a manga, you know they won't ❌
At least not immediately. If it goes like in every other romcom manga, he avoids her for a few chapters, hurts her as well and drama happens. Then one of them finds a working brain cell and talks to the other.

If we're lucky, it will be faster and she will quickly realise something is weird and force him to talk

My take on all this is that we all know Rei is absolutely clueless. In an ideal world, he would be sensitive enough to pick up on Tohno's pain, but they are both blokes, and as such, neither can communicate. So, these chapters were always on the horizon, and I'm mildly shocked that they are here this soon (axe.kun??) If this does get resolved in the next few chapters, I really hope that the story continues, since so many manga only get as far as the will they/won't they. I need this to push past this plotline and continue with the romance.

"Worst big brother ever existed" Might be the most deluded take you could have.

Have you engaged in other media? Or actually seen how some real families treat each other? Rei's a sweet young man that explicitly adores his younger brother and wants the best for him. He hasn't acted with any malice towards the boy at all. Not so much as a raised hand or cruel remark.

The idea that Youta's life is "ruined" because of a (relatively) minor complex around girls is equally laughable. As is the idea that Rei is even vaguely responsible for the actions of girls eager for his attention.

As for your last point, I'd urge you to give the manga another read. Take note that Youta isn't some sad sack loser. He's got friends at school and is happy at home. Unless Rei actively chooses to invade his brother's privacy he has every reason to assume Youta is just mellowing out in high school, not that multiple girls have traumatized him.
