Is it just me or is anyone else wishing there wasn't a magic cure for her? The goal of having to cure your real-world disability before you can be any use is never a good lesson and I think having a wheelchair-bound lancer would be much more orginal and just plain awesome.

Nah. I wouldn't say there's anything inherently wrong about this message. The complaint you generally see is that if curing the disability is always the thing that must be done in a positive story, it means there's no place or future in society for people disabled in a significant way. A person with a disability should be able to live a decent life in a decent society. But that doesn't mean such a person shouldn't dream of getting rid of that disability.

A poor person should be able to dream of getting rich without anyone telling him/her that poor people have the same value as humans, so forget about getting a nice home and car, travelling abroad, just enjoy your life of no luxuries knowing you are worth it. What kind of message is that? A person bound to a wheelchair should be able to dream of running, walking, skiing, touring old castles with plenty of stairs. These kind of fantasy stories are about escapism anyway.

......

ok guess thats one way to do it...

Honestly would have gone with a compound crossbow. Relitively powerful, compact and easy to fire from a sitting position, and some of the newer models can fire rather quickly. Even if the modern repeating crossbows lack in the power department, I'm sure fantasy materials and some enchanting could solve most of those issues.
That was my guess too but I suppose mc thought the Lance would let her better make use of her crazy speed

that felt a bit odd since the goal is to get her walking again, but maybe those crystals will only heal her so much, letting her walk but keeping her from sprinting through the dungeon

I’ve always said that a lance is one of the best weapons because it has great reach and can deal immense damage.
It’s a good choice for Shion; if she masters the use of her chair and takes full advantage of her weapon, she’ll be quite formidable.
I wonder what Rebecca will do or say when she encounters her, especially since Rebecca hasn’t even spoken to Reito yet...

Maybe? I don't think that this story is saying she's only useful once cured, but it's clumsily close to it. On one hand, the setting is a highly bigoted society which treats her like a subhuman for being disabled. But on the other hand, the protagonist treats her with dignity, and is guiding her towards superpowers and a cure. That reads more like "It's bad to treat disabled people like subhumans! It's good to treat them with dignity and support them!" He could have found her a dignified desk job (Batgirl/Oracle method), but this is a dungeons and super powers manga.

I agree that it's good to give people their escapism. What's always bugged me is how super-wheelchair characters can feel a little goofy. I get that keeping the chair helps make the chair a positive symbol of freedom, not a negative symbol of disability. But then they come up with "the chair runs people over! They strap a jousting lance to the armrest and they stab when they run you over!" The power set is goofy!

And there's an obvious improvement: Make the chair turn into a giant robot. Super-Wheelchair is a mecha power after all. Make a dozen different robots/vehicles that the chair hooks up with. Now she can be a Gundam, or a helicopter, or a submarine, or a library.

Not for beginners...but she can learn once she used with fighting
Not for beginners?! A crossbow is one of the easiest weapons to learn.
Sure, a spear is easier (hit them with the pointy end), and a club is even easier (hit them with.. err, any of it), but crossbows are still really easy. Bonus points for not needing to worry much about footwork (important in this case, even with a magic wheelhoverchair).

Bonus negative points to this chapter for the stupidly short, cartoon style 'lance' they drew. At least it wasn't a scythe I guess...

The crossbow would be harder for her because she would need to hold it herself. With the lance strapped to her chair, she can focus her hands entirely on doing what she needs to do to maneuver.

Maybe if she had been training with smaller crossbows for years and was already proficient with using one one-handed, it could work to have her use her other hand to move, but that's clearly not the case here.

A sword would normally be the best choice for a beginner
Uh, no, author, it wouldn't. Swords are, in fact, one of the hardest melee weapons to learn to use.

The truly easiest melee weapon to learn is the spear; it's one of the reasons it was the primary weapon of footsoldiers throughout history the world over. You could teach a person how to use it competently in as little as a week then devote the rest of training to fighting in formation (the other reason it was primary). Of course, that's also ignoring how expensive a sword is to forge compared to a spear (hell, you can make 3-4 spearheads with the same amount of steel as a single longsword), but that's neither here nor there.

A sword is more convenient to carry than a polearm of any kind, which is the main reason they were popular off the battlefield, but in a setting with convenient little dimensional pockets, that doesn't matter one bit. Give her a partizan, one with a good broad head, and teach her to thrust it so the flat of the blade is parallel to the ground, then she could spear the enemy, turn immediately as she retreats, and the blade would slice the wound wide open.
