I am curious how it works, maybe his constant preaching and guilt tripping others to do what he wants is considered selfish and thus he became tainted. Like he is doing this without regard for the others who feel at peace here and is trying to stir up trouble because he is convinced his wife should be there with him and the fact that she is not is MC's fault. Also those people really wanting to help the others who were burning are kind of amazing in a way, there wouldn't be much they could do even if given the opportunity except become more casualties but they still feel guilt for being the only ones safe from the demons.
