Fun fact: chocolate is PROBABLY safe for pets after all, because the toxin is mostly in the cacao, and candies, especially the cheap ones, are mostly sugar and flavoring with small amount of actual chocolate/cacao in there so most of the time your pet has to eat a copious amount before it becomes toxic.

Please, even though you can, still don't give chocolate to your cat and/or dog...

Giving your pet chocolate is not the same as jabbing them with tetrodotoxin. It’s more like… caffeine. Less bad actually; the LD50 for theobromine (one of the the toxic parts in chocolate for cats and dogs) is 200 mg/kg of weight, whereas caffeine is 100–150 mg/kg. About half that is the minimum lethal dose, and ingesting about 1/10th is when the toxic symptoms start to show up.

In any case, unless you know, best avoid chocolate, and if they ingest dark chocolate, hurry more.
