Tbh if the heir is ass at the sword but good at magic, and your family's duty is to protect a border, you should make him learn magic anyways. Not only does it look good to have an heir that excels at something, but he's a lot less likely to get killed in battle. And his mom is a top magician anyways, so it's not like you can say the magic affinity came out of nowhere
