Missing Chapter

I track my reading list with mal-sync because do it manually is labour, but I have a problem. Why the over all chapter is not add up with the actual chapter? How MAL track manga chapter? Like, I just read one completed manga at 168 chapters but they said this manga have 176 chapters? Are they count all the extra? But the extra not that many either? Or when the over all chapter just of one number and I frantically search for that one missing chapter.

How MAL track manga chapter?

From my experience MAL likes to count the extras as chapters too. You can usually check this out in the More Info section on a manga entry. For example, Murasakiiro no Qualia, as you can see on MyAnimeList it has 21 total chapters but on here it's only 18. For this manga More Info tab on MAL says the following:

Volume 1 contains short extra chapter.
Volume 3 contains two short extra chapters and short text in the from of a letter, "Hako no Naka no Tegami" (箱の中の手紙).

So they counted the 3 extras as it's own chapter.

This isn't always the case of course, sometimes the MAL entry will be shorter than the MangaDex entry. An example of this would be Tomo-chan wa Onnanoko! which has only 56 chapters on MyAnimeList while having 953 on MangaDex. This can be explained because MAL is tracking the official printed release chapter count instead of the web series.
