That’s not entirely true. The site owners still depend on the support of the people who use it, so users have just as much of a real stake in the platform as staff members who rely on the revenue generated by user activity. In that sense, users also have a say in how the site is run.Again, I don't disagree with the frustration and some of the anger over this. It was not handled especially well. But the sunk cost fallacy that so many of the commenters here are falling into is just that - a fallacy. Only the owners of the site have any real stake in it - while a huge number of users including myself have spent time and energy here, and relied on the database as a way to organize their reading, we have no 'rights' in any real sense. This is how the internet is today. I don't like it, but I have learned to accept it.
I am a supporter for a reason. This recent development has not persuaded me to end that support.
This applies not only to readers but also to the groups that actively upload content. As you can see from this thread, many group leaders are already looking for alternatives and criticizing how the situation is being handled. The MD staff don’t produce the translations themselves, so they rely even more heavily on the community. In that respect, the staff may actually have the least independent standing, since they depend on everyone else involved.
You may not see a reason to withdraw your support, but many users in this thread already have. If users migrate elsewhere, that will likely affect the site’s ad revenue (I’m not sure exactly how their ad system works, but they clearly rely on it to some extent).
I understand that you’re very supportive of the site, but not everyone feels the same way, whether they are financial supporters or uploaders, and those are the very people the platform depends on to stay afloat.
