If you ever catch yourself in a situation where you must sleep but simply cannot fall asleep, focus on breathing.
Breathe in slowly while focusing on your stomach instead of your chest, and breath out slowly. Every time you breathe out, focus in one part of your body to relax, as if the tension in your body is leaving through your nose when you exhale. Tongue held on the ceiling of your mouth, breathe through your nose.
You're too tense to let your body realize it's supposed to be sleeping, so by relieving the tension like that, you finally communicate to your brain it's time to be unconscious.
