There's three things to keep in mind here.

1. Self insert bullshit: The author knows his readers are, by and large, fucking turbonerd NEETs who would never even ask a cute girl out. Thus the reader self-insert needs to be equally inept, but also have next to no personality aside from being "nice", which is a trait anyone can have with zero effort.
2. Money: If the reader self-insert was like "fuck yeah lets bump uglies" in chapter 2, it'd be a short manga, and the author, like other manga authors, wants to serialize this and have it go for years and have 5 animes and shit so they can make huge cash.
3. Finally: The ones with the guys that accept it outright exist, it's just they're all H-doujins because lets be real, seggs.

What exactly can an introvert do, not act introverted? That's not something a gf or two can cure in a day, certainly not these two walking red flags. The guy is comfortable being invisible, bad with being in the center of attention, certainly not ready to be making enemies, and the only other person he knows is laughing her ass off at his misfortune.
Him being overwhelmed is the one part of the story that's actually believable.
