This thread is for suggesting and discussing new tags to be implemented on MangaDex.
Read the guidelines below then post your suggestion as a reply here.

All tags are subject to review by the mod team and are not guaranteed to be added.

Guidelines:

1. The tag should represent a broad theme or concept that can apply to many different series. Avoid tags that are too niche or abstract. Providing examples is encouraged to clarify where it would be used.
2. Provide a clear explanation of the tag's purpose and what type of content it's meant to categorize. At the very least your suggestion should answer the question: What type of content is it meant to categorize?
3. Avoid suggesting tags that could closely overlap with existing ones. If unsure, check our Tags Definition for guidance, ask if you're still unsure.
4. Tags should primarily focus on describing the content itself, such as its themes, genres, or storytelling structure. Tags that focus on external conditions or processes will be rejected. Other types of tags may be accepted, provided they help users identify the reading structure or navigational format of the content.
5. All suggested tags must align with our site rules. Tags for content that violates these rules will not be accepted.

Important:

Currently a rework is being done to handle "porn tags". This new system will allow us to categorize these tags to flag them appropriately and segregate them from the main list of tags. Suggestions for these tags will not be considered at this time.

Below is a list of tag suggestions that meet the above requirements and are subject to review by the mod team. This list is a work in progress and will be updated.

  • Idols

LN Advertisement

For all the series that abruptly end after introducing the plot and main characters.

Recent example: Meikyuu Teikoku no Tsukurikata (Eng: The Making of a Labyrinthine Empire) - It's currently listed as an "Adaptation"... but I honestly question if LN advertisements should qualify as an adaptation at all.

Maybe the tag could be Abrupt Ending instead? It would apply to both promos and axed stories...
That sounds good, that could work pretty well when combined with the novel source, as you can rather definitively compare if the manga ending cuts out a lot of the story and then ends. That should be objectively assignable in those situations

Ones I definitely think need to be implemented:

Childcare - Used for series whose primary focus is on raising a young child. Examples: 'I Became a Doting Father' and 'The Chick-Class Hunter is Filial'

Farming - Used for series where the primary focus is in farming and agriculture. Examples: 'Solo Farming in the Tower' and 'Sprit Farmer'

Dungeon/Tower - Used for series where dungeons/towers appear on modern day Earth. Examples: 'The Housekeeper of the Dungeon' and 'A Wimp's Tower Strategy Guide'

Ones I think probably could/should be implemented:

Maids - Used for series where a maid is the main protagonist or love interest. Examples: 'My Recently Hired Maid is Suspicious' and 'The Food Diary of Miss Maid'

Streamers - Used for series where the protagonist streams and interacts with their viewers, be it in a dungeon, a tower, or a video game. Examples: 'The Overpowered Newbie', 'A Bottom-Tier Ojousama Dungeon Streamer', and 'Genius Archer's Streaming'

I wonder if gendered tags could be considered.
Like, there are a lot of currently on the site tags that are essentially the same (BL/GL, Loli/Shota, Harem/Girl Harem) and some that would have different genre norms if classified this way (Romance, Vampires, Gyaru, Crossdressing, for example)
Sadpanda does it this way.
Could also make the meaning of some tags more clear if combined with a misc tag, like ghost currently has both cute ghosts and horror ghosts in it, which makes that tag really muddled.

What's the deal with adding a Mahjong tag? It seems to run afoul of Guidelines #1 and #3. Regarding #1, it's so niche there is only 1 full page of results (so few results they had to make a bug fix for it to work). Regarding #3, it is already covered by the "traditional games" tag, which covers similar games like chess, go, and shogi.

Edit: reworded to reference the guidelines of the thread it was moved to.

What's the deal with adding a Mahjong tag? Y'all were so adamantly against adding new tags, especially overly niche ones already covered by existing tags. Then one of the only new tags added in ages is Mahjong, which is so niche there is only 1 full page of results, and is already covered by the "traditional games" tag, which covers similar games like chess, go, and shogi.
Wrong thread

To be fair, some mahjong manga aren't even tagged correctly, like Kaiji part 3. So maybe there is more than one page actually. :thonk:

Hi everyone, we appreciate your efforts to see new tags added to the site. To keep it brief: we are currently overhauling our internal workflow for adding tags.

Because of this transition, the current guidelines in this thread are a bit outdated. I’m working on updating the formal process to ensure it’s clear for everyone moving forward. I’ll keep this thread open for continued discussion and will post a full update once the new workflow is finalized (no ETA).

To address the Mahjong tag specifically: that was an exception added by request of a 3rd party, rather than through our standard suggestion process.

New Theme Suggestion - Transgender

Skimmed through this thread and didn't really see any major discussion about it, so fuck it, I'll bite the bullet and be the one to throw it out there. Has there been any consideration for this tag or some tag related to gender issues from a more broad perspective? Genderswap and Transgender are both different enough things that I think they deserve to be categorized separately. Genderswap is basically just the Gender Bender tag and let's be honest with ourselves: this is the tag for the fetish of magically transforming into a girl, ala Ranma 1/2, Gyaru TS, Idol Pretender, anything that Kashii Yutaka has written, etc. Lumping both of them together makes it harder to find manga that are specifically about trans people and not the (respectfully) fetish stuff if you're trying to find specifically the former.

Explicit examples (work is basically ABOUT being trans):
Looser examples (work has a trans character in it, or it's technically not a major focus):
maybe a broad 'gender identity' tag, like the mangaupdates one, would be more useful, used for anything that takes gender themes seriously. So, besides transgender stories, it'd also apply gender bend stories like Ore ga Watashi ni Naru made or stories focusing on cisgender people that have internal conflicts regarding gender norms.

I would say those three things should get separate tags each.
Broad tags are just overinclusive and put things with different target audiences together, which defeats the purpose of having tags.
