This thread is for suggesting and discussing new tags to be implemented on MangaDex.
Read the guidelines below then post your suggestion as a reply here.

All tags are subject to review by the mod team and are not guaranteed to be added.

Guidelines:

1. The tag should represent a broad theme or concept that can apply to many different series. Avoid tags that are too niche or abstract. Providing examples is encouraged to clarify where it would be used.
2. Provide a clear explanation of the tag's purpose and what type of content it's meant to categorize. At the very least your suggestion should answer the question: What type of content is it meant to categorize?
3. Avoid suggesting tags that could closely overlap with existing ones. If unsure, check our Tags Definition for guidance, ask if you're still unsure.
4. Tags should primarily focus on describing the content itself, such as its themes, genres, or storytelling structure. Tags that focus on external conditions or processes will be rejected. Other types of tags may be accepted, provided they help users identify the reading structure or navigational format of the content.
5. All suggested tags must align with our site rules. Tags for content that violates these rules will not be accepted.

Important:

Currently a rework is being done to handle "porn tags". This new system will allow us to categorize these tags to flag them appropriately and segregate them from the main list of tags. Suggestions for these tags will not be considered at this time.

Below is a list of tag suggestions that meet the above requirements and are subject to review by the mod team. This list is a work in progress and will be updated.

Tags in consideration:

  • Idols
  • Economics

If it's been suggested so often, wouldn't it make sense for it to have its own thread for the sake of discussing the specifics of how the tag would work?
You can discuss that in here. But it's ultimately up to us mods to decide how a tag will be applied.
it might be better to reword the post to make that more clear, because right now it feels like little more than examples of stuff that've been suggested before
I can't make promises.
The purpose of the list is to show users what we could potentially add and to serve as a reference for when it's time to do so.
It's basically been pocket vetoed right now, which I'm sure isn't really the mod team's intent, right?
No, as I explained in an earlier post:
[...] we can't add any tags to the site yet, as we need to discuss them first, and the developers are busy working on higher priority things
I want to point out that we need a developer involved in this discussion, but as I mentioned, they’re currently busy.

In the end, we all (in the mod team) agreed not to add every single suggested tag, as that's not the purpose of MangaDex. If you're looking for a more database-like experience, I recommend using MangaUpdates.

How much people want a certain tag is still something we consider though.

See, this is what I think you should make more clear. As it is now, this thread feels a bit pointless, like everyone's just throwing darts at a titanium dart board. Editing in something that's basically exactly like what you said here would act as a much better reassurance that what's posted in this thread isn't just being ignored, you know?

I updated the wording and the formatting of the initial post, hopefully it is clearer now. I apologize to anyone that thought we were ignoring the suggestions.

Currently, one-page oneshots (such as those from Twitter) are given the same "oneshot" tag as full length, published oneshots. These two styles of manga are completely different, and really ought to be categorized separately. It can be frustrating to be looking for a oneshot to read, as these one-pagers often outnumber more complete stories.
I suggested double-tagging amateur self-published web manga with doujinshi, to distinguish them from web manga published on KadoComi and other professional sites so Twitter oneshots would have the oneshot, doujinshi and web comic tags. I got shouted down.

This is a pity since when I’m browsing for new published titles I can’t filter out web manga, since a lot of manga is direct to web these days, and even filtering out oneshots (which means missing decent magazine oneshots) leaves a lot of Twicomi dross I’m not interested in since some are sequential.

Tag Suggestion: Surrealism
For Manga that are weird, illogical and seemingly operate on moon logic.
Manga's that make a reader go "Huh? Wha?" the entire time.
Hi, this could work as a tag.
However, I'd like to have a clearer definition. Because this could possibly overlap with the Psychological tag depending on the definition. And to avoid users misusing it for anything that just feels “weird” (subjectivity).

I'm no art historian, but wouldn't a good dividing line between philosophical and surrealism the presence/absence of logic in the text? Something akin to "themes and elements embracing rational thought" v "themes and elements embracing illogic and non sequitur"?

Indeed.

A better description for this tag might be:
"Stories that use illogical or absurd elements, often defying conventional reality and prioritizing irrational scenarios over a straightforward narrative."

  • Exiled

Abandoned, Banished, Betrayed, Dismissed, Exiled, Expelled, Outcast... there's a lot of words for it, but basically it's where the MC is cast out alone with no support by the people that were suppose to be their friends/family/teammates... etc.

examples:
  1. The Royal Court Magician is Exiled: The Most Skilled Magician Who was Banished for Being Incompetent Seems to be Starting an Adventurer Clan with His Subordinates
  2. A Slow Life After Being Expelled, Which I Never Wanted?: I was Supposed to Have Retired, but Somehow I Ended Up Becoming a Beautiful Girl's Mentor, and for Some Reason, She Has Taken a Liking to Me.
  3. The Exiled Prince’s Rapid Level-up in a Monster-Infested Forest: The True Nature of “Appraisal,” Mocked as the Weakest Skill, Was Actually the All-Seeing “Eye of God”
  4. The Knight-Loving Saint is Happy in Her Exile
  5. An Exiled Blacksmith Uses His Cheat Skills to Forge Legends: His Fiancée Kicked Him Out of His Store, but He’s Happier Now that He can Make Things at Will
  6. The Path of an S-Class Adventurer: The Exiled Boy Becomes the World's Strongest With His True Ability, "Weapon Master"
That's just the first 6 of 48 titles I found for the word "exile" using my default search settings...
  • includes word "Exile"
  • Sort by Recently Added
  • Exclude: 4-Koma, Long Strip, Boy's Love
  • Content Rating: Safe, Suggestive
  • Original Language: Japanese
  • Has Translated Chapters: English
I checked that those 6 matched the tag theme I am suggesting... some of the other 42 might not fit the theme.

I would name it: experimental
I'd say that that would be a different tag entirely, as that is more a meta thing.
Though, properly defining that in a useful way is gonna be tough.
Like, "Experimental is for stories that aren't following established formulas and focus on exploring new ways to write stories" would be a definition of that.
Though that would be a nightmare to decide when and for how long that should apply.

Maybe instead a definition like "Works in which the author explores what can be done with genres or topics", like how Hero Union BBS is an early exploration of what Isekai could be.
Feel like it requires more cooking, though

Oh, I was thinking of more untemporal-ish meaning.

Like Tokyo Zombie.
