Like dude is avoiding being alone with her like the plague. You did this to yourself Misato. Maybe...write a letter. High school confessions may feel juvenile but they are actual confessions. No shade for not having romance experience at any age, but saying it outloud may be too high a hurdle. I'm just saying. Would've been impossible even for this dude to miss the signs after the sleepover. What also seems to have happened is his own feelings were stirred that night and he's having trouble dealing with them in light of a) perceived social pressure and b) his own past.

It's been clear that the dude has some trauma from his past, and that's why he isn't allowing himself to get involved with her and it isn't just your typical "Shonen protagonist is scared of girls" thing.
