Lots of people overreacting here. It's been clear that the dude has some trauma from his past, and that's why he isn't allowing himself to get involved with her and it isn't just your typical "Shonen protagonist is scared of girls" thing. And from the ending it seems like we are finally going to get more info about that.
His "trauma" is that he neglected his family life for his work, which he's already realized was stupid and why he mellowed out. This was already covered a while ago, we don't need to rehash it again. His fear that he'll make the same mistake is unwarranted given both the fact that he's aware of his previous behavior and actively avoids it and also that Misato literally works with him so him focusing on "work" wouldn't even be that bad considering they'd still be spending time together. Hell the vast majority of their interactions that made Misato fall in love with him is THROUGH working with him, so him (potentially) slipping back into bad old habits wouldn't even register to her.
Also the friend is being framed in a way that makes me think he'll be a new "antagonist" towards their relationship. He'll find out Misato is smoking hot and try to put the moves on her while he's in town only for Konishikawa to get jealous/upset and "defend" her. Hopefully that makes him realize he actually wants her and they'll be able to move on but knowing this author it'll just be a "Return to Neutral Position" again.
Kida and the cute intern/new girl have a way better dynamic and I wish the story focused more on them. It's sad that a better love story is happening through the side characters and at this point is mostly off screen.
