Something that's obvious that people seem to forget is that creatures that hunt in packs do so for a reason.
Wolves do it because mooses, elks and bisons are big motherfuckers and take a lot of punishment to take down.
What that means is, if during a hunting trip one or two wolves die or get heavily injured, the whole pack would retreat, because losing numbers probably means they can't take down a bigger target and the whole pack dissolves.
Actually, most big hoofed animals, like bisons, learned to stand their ground against wolves because of that.

Every prey animal you named uses the same word, whether singular or plural. No "s" or "es" at the end.
So 'moose', 'elk', 'bison' are all the plural for a group of/category title for those animals.

You're correct about the behavior of pack animals and large prey animals though, yes.
