Something that's obvious that people seem to forget is that creatures that hunt in packs do so for a reason.
Wolves do it because mooses, elks and bisons are big motherfuckers and take a lot of punishment to take down.
What that means is, if during a hunting trip one or two wolves die or get heavily injured, the whole pack would retreat, because losing numbers probably means they can't take down a bigger target and the whole pack dissolves.
Actually, most big hoofed animals, like bisons, learned to stand their ground against wolves because of that.
