A map is a useful tool but I think i would have started with increasing the supply of food and water. Farming and wells.

A map is a fine idea, and he's got good fundamentals for the steps to follow. The sense of direction also saves a monumental amount of time for getting this done.

What he lacks traces back to language, since there's a number of suitable drawings for use as a legend, and paper is not strictly necessary when you can make a big picture on the ground and let people copy. Easier to get accurate distances that way, too.

I like this chapter. It's a nice subversion of the trope where the otherworlder just goes and uses their knowledge from their previous world to their advantage in the new one. Like, how many things that you make use of in your daily life would you actually be able to reproduce in another world given none of the niceties of modern living? And here there's the language barrier on top of that.

He's doing pretty well to realize that early and think of the things he can do despite the limitations.
