of course it's defeatist. I said in that very comment that I just might not be built for this kind of story,
you're missing my point: I'm saying you're defeatist
as a person . you can read /drop whatever story you want, it doesn't affect the value of you as a person.
because were I in Naoomi's shoes I'd have refrained from dealing with Yuzu the moment she asked me to fake-kidnap her--since you seemed to gloss over that when painting Naoomi with the 'bad first impression brush', yourself.
you didn't mention this when you discussed Yuzu 'would be biggest offender' in this thread so clearly
you glossed over it first, not me. also, they made a deal in which she paid for his expenses which
MC needed, so MC clearly made a better judgment than you
. they both felt attraction to each other after chapter 1 so overall , their first impressions were pretty good, unlike the first impression MC left on some other members of the family, some of which hasn't been fixed yet.
We know about as much of the grandfather & uncle as we do any of the others. Just because they've put a "not-bad" face forward at the start doesn't mean they're going to remain as such. Sure, yes, very pessimistic of me, but either the entire family
you words: 'cannot fathom' and repeating '
entire family' is more than just 'very pessimistic', it's the logic of someone who judges everyone, and becomes a recluse when only
a few people treated you badly
once in the first few weeks of school/work.
but either the entire family is fronting in some manner and even the mother and the aunt are going to be "not bad" at some reveal later on, or all of them have narrative baggage that will play into obstacles put before Naoomi & Yuzu as the story progresses.
your ‘all of them must be the same’ mentality is retarded; some with baggage, some without is much more likely. especially since current narrative suggests Yuzu's mom has a lot, while nothing suggests maid and young uncle have any
You can't write off some and absolve others when we're this early in, and then judge others for making snap calls at the same time.
The heck? I did neither. I wrote ‘
seems wrong’. your 'snap call' for
all of them is very contrary to the current narrative so deserves to be judged as ridiculous either way though,
The "maid groping Yuzu" thing is, admittedly, simply me despising that entire trope within romcom manga. The female friend/associate character being stupidly horny wherein it's entirely fine for her to utilize sexualized physical humor, and yet the moment a non-female character does it to anyone it's cause for derision, has never sat well with me. The double standard aside, there should at least be a plot-relevant or character-relevant reason for it. Otherwise it's just fan service for the sake of being lewd, which I don't appreciate if I'm also supposed to take the characters seriously. But it does in fact have an effect on Naoomi. The fact the maid got all bashful and askew when Naoomi accidentally touched her chest with a finger, and Yuzu getting secretly flustered over it, just means Naoomi is the heel going forward until otherwise noted. Especially as the other two prominent female cast members have both physically struck him; it's fine with any other character (notably a woman) does something, but he'll be blamed, ridiculed, derided, or even abused if he approaches anything resembling similar behavior, even if it's accidental.
it's clear it was a joke this chapter, so no actual derision and nothing about this suggests he is a ‘heel’. In fact, Yuzu holding in her internal jealousy partly makes her the heel since she realizes maid could openly romance him (unlike her as his sister).
Also, he was actually rude to aunt shuuka first:
https://forums.mangadex.org/threads...-ch-8-that-just-bugs-me.2672419/post-30383842 . So while she definitely overreacted, it’s
not entirely unwarranted.
But that doesn't mean that, were this a real-life situation, Naoomi wouldn't be far better off simply saying "just give me enough money to get my feet under me and I'll fuck off and you don't have to deal with me anymore", especially as they're refusing him any part of an inheritence, much less any acknowledgement of validity as his father's son.
chapter 1 says dad 'left behind
very little that could truly be called assets' , so implication is that they're not purposely refusing, but it's more pragmatic not to divide whatever they have.
I am absolutely making a call that ignores the plot that the author is pushing Naoomi down.
Naoomi is forced to deal with them, because this is a story on rails and the author has an endgoal in mind. But realistically, even with his personality I'm hardpressed to see why he'd want to put up with this much for long, just to find his dad.
Part of that is the subtext of Japanese society, when it comes to him just taking the abuse from the aforementioned others because of hierarchical observation,
He was only slapped twice, ridiculous to call it 'author is pushing Naoomi down' and 'this much', when he had fun too - gardening with the maids, and his greetings with younger uncle, and grandpa were pleasant.
and partly "manga convention" when we have the tropes like the groping maid and the being gangpressed into doing whatever the cute heroine wants him to do. But there's a limit, and I would actually be surprised if even narratively he doesn't freak out at a certain point and run, at least temporarily.
exaggerating much? Yuzu never ordered him to do anything. no idea why you'd think a girl groping another girl who isn't THAT resistant (Yuzu just complained about heat), is worth 'freaking out' about either.
I'll admit that painting the entire family with this brush was undeserved, and I take it back. They're just guilty by association, which is a red flag but not actual guilt. My bad.
thank you, that was my main point.
But judgmental and defeatist? That seems wrong. Every time we meet anybody, we make judgements. Are they acquaintances or budding friends? Are they acting threateningly? Does their sense of humor rub you the wrong way? We decide who gets to be in our lives all the time.
when he only has one family member (mom) as far as we know, completely severing
multiple familial ties immediately based on first impressions of only two/three of them
is defeatist.
I used to date a girl. The first time I was introduced to her family, I met her Aunt first. Her aunt, a gun-wearing parole officer, told me if I ever hurt her niece she would pistol whip me. Seemed off, I hadn't done anything to warrant a threat. I told her parents I couldn't eat fish, and they served fish for dinner. Her sister would get racist and bash the poor when she got drunk. But I put up with it because I believed in my girlfriend.
Years later, the girlfriend became increasingly toxic and focused on another male friend. We had drifted apart and she dropped the hobbies that first brought us together. Sensing time was up we called it off, and six months later she married the other guy. I was with her for 10 years, and I wish I paid attention to the red flags 9 years sooner. I wish I could get that time back.
The point is, maybe our first judgments are correct and maybe they aren't- but it's legitimate to pay attention to the evidence and actions they present. Cutting toxic people out of your life isn't defeatist. It's setting boundaries.
My condolences about what happened to you, but this is too extreme an example and
really not comparable to the current situation in this manga. they've literally lived together for a week or two, and MC only talked to most of them once, so it would be too judgmental
now. this family needs time to get used to MC the illegitimate relative too
