It's kinda refreshing to see somewhat realistic portrayal of long term character flaws. Not some shallow trauma that is instantly overcome when the main character gives a passionate speech, followed by immediate reconciliation.

The mom is messed up for reasons we don't know, and it's genuinely affecting everyone's relationship, and she doesn't just cut herself off, or come around right away. This is tough, and there'll need to be continuous effort and time to even begin to see any healing.

the mom wanting to seal away her daughters powers to make her "normal" to give her (in her eyes) a better life feels very similar to when immigrant families name their children very standard names and actively don't teach them their ancestral languages and stuff like that to make them assimilate smoother. it's a very interesting path for her character to go as the pure yokai and I'm curious where they take it. it has all the touchstones of a parent desperate to give their child a better life and making huge sacrifices to make it happen without working with the child to see what that means. what a good story!!!

It's weird that the mom is apparently going to visit them when they just left. They couldn't talk before? Or maybe the mom sees where the relationship is going and wants to scope out her daughter's physical living situation?

Side note: Yachiru wants to change Hasshaku-sama's image, but does that mean being restoring "scary" as the aspect over "sexy", or does she intend to improve Hasshaku's image, creating a new public image (with Seiichiro's help, presumably), and how would she do that? A new cryptid for the 21st century?

Also, it really seems like a yokai's self-image is most important for shaping their power. I wonder what that implies for Yachiru's mother? Maybe Yachiru and Seiichiro can help her heal too?

I get the distinct feeling that the mother is not nearly as "bad" as a surface-level reading of the story makes her out to be, perhaps because she herself has some form of trauma that she doesn't want her daughter to also go through. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Can't it just be as simple as a pure-blooded yokai understanding that if humans knew about your supernatural power you're likely to be hunted down? I doubt everyone is a Hasshaku-sama enthusiast like Yachiru's Dad, Seiichirou, or us the readers. To be honest the fact that Seiichirou & Yachiru are conducting their experiments in secret rather than at a public park suggests they understand the danger involved so I question why they are even still pursuing the goal despite the risk. Nothing at this point demands they live life as anything other than a seemingly human couple.

Something I found interesting is not once since she's been introduced, has the Mother changed sizes or let out a Popopo despite being a pure-blood. I wonder if the spell she placed on her daughter was also cast on her.

I stay of the opinion that MILF youkai simply wanted her daughter to not have the troubles of a half youkai and live a normal human life with normal human problems, but for their strained relationship, her youkai thought pattern and stuff she never communicated that or just assumed it was how things should have been done, not realizing that sealing her powers was like cutting a limb or suppressing a sense for someone that was able to use that power for all their life, even not realizing how she is proud of being who she is.

That's a very insightful observation. It's almost like Youkai is just an ethnicity, which is a smart way to tackle these fantasy problems in the story in a way that feels grounded and real.

The means do not justify the ends; Humanity justifies the means to an end.

It's always some kind of deflection or misdirection, people will scream about change but never actually elect to make changes.

It was already explained that the public image affects her powers, so doesn't that mean she would become an actual monster, and incapable of having a normal relationship, if she succeeds?

public image affecting her powers was the assumption yachiru was operating under before, but in the first part of this chapter her mom admitted this was a lie. it's become extremely clear over the last sixteen chapters that the biggest thing affecting yachiru's powers is her own self-image.

also, her wanting to change public perception of yokai doesn't necessarily mean making them scary again. what form she wants that perception to take, and maybe even what misconceptions she has about that goal, is something that will probably be explored as it becomes more central to the ongoing story.
