I don't think any explanation will be believable enough with so many contraceptive options available, other than there being no contraceptives in the world where the story takes place, of course.

This manga should have been a oneshot. As in tradition, the title is too specific, and the mangaka wrote themself into a corner: Now they are going to try and retroactively save face after being called out, and fail.
