Theoretically I like the characters in this, I just wish the author would find another story to tell besides the same one we've repeated in like 3-5 chapter mini-arcs since the beginning of "everyone thinks Univas is incompetent. They mistreat him. He shows them they're wrong. they either get their comeuppance (if they're evil/dickheads) or repent (if they're just misguided). Rinse and repeat."

It's going to be the same here. Univas is going to beat this guy because he's a douche, save the other spirits, and the guild spirit girl is going to realize he's worth respecting. Then we go to the next town and start all over again.

Also why the hell are the guy's teeth sticking out of his mouth in the bottom panel of page 15? I thought it was supposed to be his tongue sticking out at first (because he's a sicko) but I think it's meant to be his teeth except that the artist forgot to keep them behind his upper lip.

Nah, I think it's supposed to be that extremely Japanese concept of suffering gracefully through things instead of trying to fix them. The spirits are made into doormats who have to obey humans because it gives the crap they go through meaning and makes the MC's kindness more virtuous. Sort of like all those isekai/feudal story manga that have characters that are just sort of accepting of being enslaved. They see some sort of weird self-sacrificing beauty in that and not "maybe we should make people resent being treated as property because any sane person realizes that being equated with livestock or a tool is awful."

as much as I hate it and will probably always rant about it, I've also learned that Japan just doesn't understand. Whether it's the fault of education or just a lack of social/cultural history with the topic (in the particularly bad way that makes it something to address) or that Japan sometimes seems to more easily get swept along in the "let's just ignore the bad things in our past because we don't want to feel bad about our history" attitude that lots of countries dip their toes into, or just the fact that so many modern manga use it as a plot device that it's desensitized people to actually considering how gross it is, they're just going to forever treat acceptance of slavery as anything from "well that's just the culture of this place" to "lol, isn't it cute and kinda backwards" to "but it's so heartwarming to see the slaves that love their master and refuse to be set free."

I know it's hard to accept, but slavery and the silent suffrage of their peasantry / lower castes has been part of their cultural heritage since it was recorded. So no, those deeply ingrained aspects of their culture won't be changing any time soon no matter how much the rest of the world views them as strange and or offencive.

Story-wise this won’t ‘fully' go away till we reach the fire kingdom since they on all accounts should still think he’s dead, but seems like it’s on the cusp of changing. I think it’s going to change because 1. We have finally been given a concrete “number” for Univas’ public perception due to the machine. 2. Warswamp should be returning to the capital in-universe-time and can make comments on how great Univas is. And 3. They went out of their way to “make it official... recorded forever in the guild”.
For the first time on the journey, his exploits are going to be witnessed by an official Human organization and directly recorded using something other than word of mouth.
All of his ‘correcting the record’ exploits have happened in small isolated towns and locations, which is why Warswamp is the only high-station person who knows what’s really going on. Don’t forget, the failure of the sea-walking was chalked up to a failure of the priestess, not the involvement of Univas, so that corner of society is still clueless.

This also sets up a secondary development: how will everyone react when the guilds ace spirit user is not only horribly bested, but also has his spirits turn on him and speak the truth? This is speculation on my part until the chapter releases, but I bet that the collars have some kind of “obedience gem” that Univas breaks, then the spirits can speak freely about how much they’ve hated being used as tools and slaves, then both princesses speak up about their experiences and everyone goes into a tizzy. The spirit women are released and work to spread word of Univas among further reaches of the spirit world and the guild has to respond to the massive egg on its face leading to some new story element involving the perception of spirits at large.

Univas always goes on about his ideals for a less abusive relationship between Humans and Spirits, but aside from him refusing the bonding ceremony, I don't remember many instances where he takes action to make his ideals real. It should have been him pushing for the spirit battle to free the enslaved spirits, not the two princesses.
I mean, he doesn't have to go Full John Brown, but at least try to realize his ideals within his immediate area.
"Ideals without power are a joke, and power without ideals is empty", but in Univas' case, he has the power and the ideals, but he doesn't act on them, so they're both kind of wasted.
