That's actually going to be an interesting point bc Gustav's whole reason for the war is unifying non-human races for a possible future conflict with Gloire or Camelot, so while he definitely is going to purge and try army officers, he might be tempted to try and integrate some like that Marine Commander who show themselves to be actually competent.

It may be easier to do that for the Marine Corps and Navy officers, since they’re less likely to have been involved in any of the pogroms and massacres, simply by the fact that they were at sea and couldn’t have been involved.

This part looks at the flaws of traditional military organisation and hierarchy, in the face of a modern military. During the Opium Wars and Boxer Rebellion, China's Eight Banners was woefully unprepared to fight modern European, American and Japanese armies:

• Designed around ethnic and clan identity, during wartime politicians had to decide which and how many units from each Banner had to be mobilised based on political and military reasons.
• Structured for both administrative and military organisation, leading to slow bureaucracy and a lack of training or updating during peacetime.
• In order to prevent military commanders from forming bases of loyalty from troops and locals from military achievements, whoever was chosen as overall commander (if at all) was rotated or reassigned from the frontlines.
• Units were scattered across the country and fulfilled different roles, leading to slow movement & lines of communication, inconsistent quality of weapons & equipment and little coordination between commanders without clear orders.
• Worse of all: The military had become so complacent from being used for internal conflicts and a lack of foreign threats, that it was not prepared to fight against militaries that were highly mobile, better organised, had more advanced weapons and allowed to act without political authorisation.

Oooh, that’s such a cool insight and lesson! Never had the chance to learn about the lesson of the war when it was taught in the syllabus back during my school days.

I’ve always assumed it was only because of Britain’s advanced weaponry (for the time), and China’s internal conflicts and politics that they won a landslide victory, and not anything to do with a modern army vs a group of clans.

Aside from what everyone else has mentioned, the elf diplomats also prioritized teatime over relaying the declaration of war to their queen, as well as underestimating Orcsen army's mobilization speed. For the most part, none of the white elves even knew they are in a war until it comes knocking on their door.
