The basic plot makes sense, but the cabin burning down is moved on from way too quickly & the supposed "antagonist" that admits being responsible successfully lurks away with a team rocket comedy line (except team rocket actually faces some consequences for their shenanigans).

Heart felt heart to heart and declaration of trust (protection kiss), immediately the gun on the wall is set off & the protection gets used up for her going in the fire (that felt more plot convenience than interesting build up), the person responsible is just completely ignored by BOTH characters despite them admiting guilt and their terrible intentions behind it, her important past is saved, but then we just completely move on. We so completely move on the bad guy gets away without either main character once interacting with them??

It's the fact that they don't interact with him in this chapter at all. There's not even a panel of it, and he's not mentioned after. And his lurking away is played as a joke from the way it's drawn.
