Having characters not communicate about things is the easiest way to sustain the conflict in a lot of stories. It works well here because both characters have their fears and inadequacies, but I feel like it's reaching that point where something's gotta give.

Communication is key for a lot of things. A lot of romance mangas would end immediately if characters just communicated how they feel and what they think. People just severely underestimate the power of communication sometimes...
