You're right, but I also remember how important social cliques were to people in high school. I'm just glad Amane isn't going down the well rutted track of "I'm not worthy."Honestly, all this stuff about social standing is so.... dumb.
Like, they're both high schoolers. Very retarded..

Many Japanese works place higher emphasis on the social caste even in high schools. It truly makes one wonder if students over there really are having to worry about things like these as much as manga makes it out to beHonestly, all this stuff about social standing is so.... dumb.

I agree but, I do feel like this is pretty among the mangas of this genre, komi-san has this to some degree (but tbf I did not really read the manga I just watched the 2 seasons of it), but at least MC feels like he's progressing forward not the one step forward and two steps backward.Honestly, all this stuff about social standing is so.... dumb.

This is stupider because it's not a clique. It's not "I can't publicly be with you because your friends hate me/won't like me." It's entirely predicated on the idea that anyone should give a single fuck about some weird parasocial "fans" of a person as if their opinions and concerns have any relevance or weight.
it's more normalizing of idol culture bullshit.
from this chapter you can see is more of an Amane thing, as him getting used by his supposed friends, absolutely destroyed his confidence and self-esteem, Mahiru really on the nose this chapter of how she feels about him without just saying let's start making babies you silly guy (actually confessing, because in class her saying they were on a date by definition was pretty clear about it)Yes this. This is not a situation where "I fear we can't be together because your family and friends hate me".
This is literally: "I fear we can't be together because some randos who I don't even know might think I'm not worthy of you. And so your social standing might suffer"
Like what the hell is even this shit. Family and friends I could understand somewhat, I'm worried about what your loved ones would think. Not the best thing to worry about, but understandable.
But this weird high school social standing / social caste thing you see in manga and novels is several orders of magnitude dumber...
Please keep in mind how Mahiru has very intentionally and for a long time maintained an impeccable reputation as a means to protect herself and to feel safe in public. Amane is worried (and dare one say maybe rightfully so) that word spreading of her mingling with someone like him, whom everyone (right now) sees as an antisocial gloomy dude, could easily ruin the protection Mahiru has built for herself. We know what Amane is like, and the last thing he would ever let himself do is become a detriment to Mahiru in whatever way.Yes this. This is not a situation where "I fear we can't be together because your family and friends hate me".
