You know... Stakes honestly have to be used with caution. I often see that authors raise the stakes willy-nilly and in doing so, make the negative outcome just impossible.
An established Setting: The world is at risk of being destroyed... It 100% won't, because the author actually wants to keep using that world, making that something he would never do.
The MC hedges his or her life: Also will never happen, for obvious reasons.
Situations that the good guys could lose and still have the story continue are honestly much better, as there is a risk now.
