I think the ending is ambiguous, especially putting aside the lens of authorial intent. And I do do that, fuck authorial intent.
I like this story a lot, whether you interpret Fuwako as straight or bi, I think the ending is really beautiful.
if this doesn't end in a relationship or at least some sort of acknowledgement, then this will have been some very frustrating yuri bait. If it does end in a relationship or acknowledgement, then this will have been a very pretty but so-so story.
The back-in-time chapters are the best! Modern-day chapters make me empathize with the overwhelmingness of so many sudden experiences and expectations too much, in other words: they're too good at what they're trying for!
@AverageDudeWithAveragePenis All gender is internally is putting certain labels on "just doing what you love." Also... if the raw literally says transgender... there's not even an authorial intent argument, let alone an in-universe argument.
