If you look over the cover art for the nine volumes, you find that Kawagawa and Taito appear on the second volume cover, and then never again. You also find many other strange characters (a goth loli, for instance). So hopefully Kawagawa won't be a major character for too long. At the very least,

@Narf - While I agree with you, the exact word used in the original text was "小動物" (small moving thing), which gives the following in a dictionary lookup: My guess is that in real life usage, the word tends to mean "mammal". But since I don't live in Japan, nor have any Japanese friends to ask...
