I think it's partly because she's too focused on Helga while things are falling apart. The more she obsesses over her, the more she's driven by irrational logic, and that's not helped by their worsening situation adding extra stress on top of that.

I enjoyed that too. Usually there isn't much of a comeback from this stuff early on, it's just further orchestration, but here even if that still happens she didn't even get phrased much. But girl didn't hesitate to throw her sister into the gutter when she stepped on her trigger.

They act up when she's in danger so perhaps when her mind isn't quite there, they see the body as unprotected from the people around her (since they are all dangerous) and acts to defend herself...
