Their geography just confused me. By "deep in the Amazon" are they implying that after 3700 years without humans the Amazon forest spread all the way to MG? Cause even before deforestation the forest wasn't that big. The map seems to show Stanley going up the Parana river, and after some googling, Araxá, MG is way southeast of the rainforest. I think the author might be underestimating continental distances a little bit.
