Oof, he fucked up the surprise with his bad internet history management.

But she clearly already is planning to say yes anyway so it's all good.

Now she just has to rehearse a convincing surprised act for when he proposes
Proposals not being a surprise is quite common, and they shouldn't be a surprise. Both parties should know they want to be married before the proposal happens.
Although in my family's experience, it's usually the woman who decides to marry her bf and so she'll drop hints like taking him with her to friends' weddings, or finding ways to bring up raising a family in casual conversation, and stuff like that. Prepping him to decide to propose, and making it obvious she'll say yes.

Yep, outside of fiction, known surprises are the best. It's the public announcement you get to spring on everybody.

A friend just got engaged a few weekends ago. It was already a done deal long before that point, but it was still fun to hear the story of the pains and plotting he went through to to make the actual time and place where he officially proposed a surprise.

I had moved into the area to stay with my gf's parents, we had picked a date, venue, reception hall, cake and dress, sent out invitations and chosen rings before I'd technically proposed. It still manged to be a surprise because we'd kinda forgotten we'd missed that step somehow.
