I went back and checked. he was able to use appraisal skill because he had picked it up "As a high-level adventurer". However, unlike when the merchant/peddler used it there was a chant so it's also possible he picked up during his attempts to find workarounds by learning the theoretical sides of skills back when he was under his own hex. It's not entirely clear what the difference between skills and magic really is. the parallel skill use skill is the only other skill mentioned to be associated with somebody else, but it was listed as more of a difficult to attain thing not a class thing. Alan became titled as a hero because he could use that skill, since it made him a national treasure, rather than gaining the skill from having the hero class.
So the way it looks right now, there are things you can do well right off the bat, and then there are things that you will only be able to do okay at after YEARS, possibly decades, of working at. Which to a child in their view of things may as well be never. It's also possible that in addition to nonaffinity there might be negative affinity. We'll see. Personally, I hope for OP loli.
speaking of classes, they are probably names given for groupings of positive affinities. A "this is what comes easily to you", rather than "this is what you can do".
