I'm fairly certain that he is around the norm for a Shounen manga mc, and he wasn't completely immune to the girls advances and teasing as he was desperately attempting to prevent a- uh 'boner' as you and many others call it. It would turned into a real shit show if he got a bit too aroused, and he knew it too.

You are indeed correct, but it's a norm to be as socially distant and conservative as possible in Japan. It's why the line "Now I can't get married!" was popular in old manga where the mc would accidentally see one of the female cast naked. Literally seeing panties is considered an act of lechery. But then again in our eyes it may be weird why this is a common factor but the Japanese don't really understand our norms either, even kissing and holding hands is reviled as a public act. It's literally the only way these stories can work and it's possible to prolong everything especially in romance manga where the main couple only get together near the end of a manga.
