@119mn0783 that's the toxic culture in Japan that most people outside Japan don't know about. When we receive a gift, it will be considered rude if we don't give anything back that is at least of half value.
So let's say we got a present that cost 5000 yen, the minimal price for the return gift is 2500 yen.
Where you bought them is also important, that's why the gift wrapping service in (mostly department) stores are serious business.
Nowadays, younger people (the ones born later 90s) are actually getting sick of this unreasonable and financially burdening culture, so they won't care so much if they don't get anything in return.
BUT!!! They ironically put a big deal on any gift giving days (Valentines, White Day, Christmas, summer holiday, autumn, New Years, etc).
"I got this from them, I should give them something next (event)", just like Komi-san is stressing about here.
So if you ever visit or decide to live in Japan, be very careful when you decide to give a Japanese friend a gift out of whim, because they will feel burdened to give you something in return.
